U's Flash: Club Host England's Crucial Clash
Posted on: Fri 23 Jul 2010
Colchester United's Weston Homes Community Stadium has been named as the venue for England's crucial European U21s Championship qualifying match against Lithuania in September.
With England potentially needing two wins from their final two games, Stuart Pearce's side will wrap up their Group 9 campaign with a trip to Essex just days after jetting back from their penultimate group match in Portugal.
Both games are critical in the side's quest to make it to Denmark for the UEFA Finals in 2011, and the Young Lions will be counting on big support from the Colchester public.
The game kicks-off at the earlier time of 4pm on Tuesday 7th September - hours before the England senior team play Switzerland in their own European qualifying campaign - and tickets are priced at just £10 for adults and £5 for concessions.
Speaking at the announcement of the venue for the fixture, U21s Coach Stuart Pearce said: "We're delighted to be heading to Colchester and we're really hoping that the match will turn out to be a success on every front.
"We appreciate the kick-off time is difficult for some people, coming that little bit earlier in the day to avoid a clash with the seniors, but by the same token we hope that it might just help a few others to get to the game.
"It will be a tough game, we know that for sure, and that's why we need as many people as we can to get across and support us."
The Weston Homes Community Stadium, home to the League One outfit for the past two years, will host its third England fixture.
Its debut match was an U19s Friendly International on 18th November 2008, when a crowd of 9,692 saw Arsenal's Henri Lansbury score the 29th-minute goal that beat their German counterparts.
Brian Eastick's England team also included players who have now made their mark in the Premier League - Danny Welbeck (Manchester United), Jack Rodwell (Everton) and Nathan Delfouneso (Aston Villa).
Last year, on 16th July, it was the turn of Hope Powell's England women's team to take the field in Colchester.
They went down 2-0 to Iceland in a warm-up match before the Euro 2009 Finals in Finland. Many stars of the last few years were involved - Faye White, Eni Aluko, Rachel Yankey, Rachel Unitt and others.
Now Stuart Pearce's U21s visit for the first time, with a mouth-watering UEFA Championship Qualifier against Lithuania in prospect. It's a match that England simply have to win.
"It's a new ground for the U21s," added Pearce, "But Colchester United are a club on the up and I believe it'll be a good time for us to go there."
Tickets for this match are available from 9am on Monday 26 July, via the Colchester United Ticket Office in person, on 0845 437 9089, via the club's ticket website www.colutickets.com, or from the club's town centre shop U's Central on Long Wyre Street, Colchester.
A discount applies for groups of 15 or more, with prices reduced to £5 (adults) and £2.50 (concessions). For more information call 0845 437 9089, email ticketing@colchesterunited.net or download the appropriate form below.
