Favourite Southend Pubs

Yeah I quite liked the Hogs too

I think the general state of pubs around the High Street is very poor.

Yeah agreed with that the Townhouse has sorted itself out alot though, The Post has always been a bit of a craphole but has got even worse recently!

If The Alex could sort out the fact they hardly seem to have anything on tap apart from Carslberg then its alright for a couple of beers and something to eat the food is really nice.

Very true, the Liberty Belle is getting a make over now to return to its former name, The Marlborough Hotel (or so I believe)

It's called the Borough Hotel I think.

Did Wetherspoons ever respond to you about the horrific service in the Post?

Ah right, I may have been in it, depending on when it was rebranded.

Give me the drinking establishments in Old Leigh/Leigh any day instead.

must be over a year ago now.

And as I said earlier, we tend to go to Old Leigh for our nights out now. Southend's nightlife is just not for me!

I don't think the Smoking Ban has done the Post any favours, as now it smells of sweat, pi$$ and stale beer... :(

That's it John thanks!

I emailed last week i think but haven't heard anything yet. A follow-up email may well be winging its way to Mr Wetherspoon's inbox!

apart from the poncy ones along the Broadway...

well it's poncy in vie bar or black cat but i think mariners has become a good middle-ground and the sarah moore is a great pub for a chilled drink. went down old leigh last weekend and it was rubbish, really chavvy and it doesn't seem like the over-21s rule has really improved it.

If its anything like their service at the bar, you'll have a long wait.....

Though the Post is slow, a bit dirty and full of chavs (sometimes), you can't doubt their commitment to real ale - always at least five different ales on tap and their Festival is great.

Agreed that the Slug is another chain bar but it does have a bit of character - has anyone else noticed the really funky popart-style canvas prints featuring places around Southend? Would love to know where they got those from, they are very good.

Agree but they seriously understaff themselves at times (i.e. between 12 and 14:30 on a Saturday afternoon during the football season)

That's the big plus for any of the Wetherspoon pubs though - they stock a great range of real ales and proper ciders (i.e. not crap like Strongbow or Magners) and their prices are very reasonable indeed.

However it is also the downfall of almost every 'Spoons I've been in - the cheap prices means that they attract a lot of idiots as clientele and also means that they apparently can't afford the extra cash to employ decent bar staff...

We're not going into the Sarah Moore as they wouldn't heat up a bottle for us - family friendly my ****.

Old Leigh's OK in some places - I still like the Billet.

I keep getting PM's from three or four posters on here asking me to meet them in The Cliff. So that must be a nice pub?
