On The Road

Just got back from watching the Jack Kerouac adaptation. I'm always the one saying you shouldn't expect a film to be the same as a book, but for someone who has had such a close relationship with the book I couldn't help but notice the missing or altered bits. But I thought they caught the spirit and themes of the book really well, the cinematography and look of the film was brilliant as was the soundtrack. The casting was great aswell, Garrett Hedlund was excellent as Dean Moriarty, and I would have loved to have seen more of Viggo Mortensen as Bull Lee. Well worth the wait.

Taken 2: 4/10 - Loved the original (who doesn't?!) but where as the original was just the right balance of cheesy action film that still grips you, this was just lazy and half-arsed through-out. There are still some good moments, but the whole film is tired, and massively toned down to make it a 12a which takes all the fun away.

Three Colors: Blue 8/10 - Really enjoyed it, looking forward to watching the next 2. Juliette Binoche is uber-sexy.

My favourite Will Ferrell film, even better than Anchorman for me!

Watched The Campaign this evening, which is amusing in a few places, but definitely not my favourite Ferrell film. 6/10

Ha!My wife still uses this in her classes with teenagers.Have to (grudgingly)admit that it's not a bad film at all.At least for teaching purposes!
Maybe the young Tom Hanks brings out your maternal instincts or perhaps it's something else.:winking:

Lining up Kill Bill vol. 1 on iPlayer later, and I've got a whole stack of disks to watch as well. Just watched Casino Royale in preparation for Skyfall (two reasons I didn't watch Quantum: 1, Casino's better, and 2, my Quantum disk is ****ed) Friday night as well. Great flick, still love the chase at the start, really sets up Craig's Bond.
 
Candyman.

First time I'd seen it. Good to see Xander Berkeley in something other than 24.

It was OK.

Anything based on Clive Barker will be a bit different. This film had some good bits:

The casting was excellent; Candyman was perfect
The setting in urban high-rise was clever. And the gangster aspect added another layer of complexity
Some of the scenes were sharp and well-directed. The ending in particular was excellent.

The bad points: Did we really believe that the worst a gang could do to her in the toilets was hit her round the head?
Some times it tried to be clever, but it just came off phoney. It was her all along? Really?
The bees: doesn't add anything and pretty pointless

But by far the best thing about the film was the score. Phillip Glass, yes, him, delivered a score which is unsettling and majestic.

Both films that deal with time travel in a way.

Looper was fun, but a bit heavy on the exposition, and the second act could have been shorter. There was a funny bit when the old and young characters are talking, and Bruce shouts "it doesn't matter". Like all time travel films, it helps not to think too much about the actualities. Good script, good direction. Let down by the dodgy make-up on Lewitt to look like a young Willis, and some of the sound issues (this could be the cinema though)

Source Code was interesting in its concept. But it felt too much like a Quantum Leap episode, with a bit of Groundhog Day and Speed mixed in. Nice ending though, and good well-rounded characters, which is a rarity.
 
Watched Horrible Bosses and War-Horse on sky movies recently

both very good films, obviously in massivly different ways

I would give Horrible Bosses 8/10 and War-Horse 8.5/10
 
On a side note, despite having all the Bonds on DVD, i have been watching a lot of Sky Movies 007 over the last few weeks, and have come to the conclusion that a) Timothy Dalton is a very under-rated Bond, and b) Roger Moore (eye-brow raising aside) is a very over-rated Bond

The was only one James Bond worth a damm.Sean Connery.

I disagree. They have different strengths. Moore was never really over-rated, he was perfect for the role at the time, and he portrayed Bond magnificently. Humour, timing, English (unlike many Bonds), and good-looking.

Dalton was good but in a more gritty way - Shakespearian, and it shows. Not much humour if any, and not much in the way of Britishness. More of an action hero than a British spy.

Personally, I love all Bonds.
