Films you've watched recently.

The Road Beyond The Pines - 9/10 - Absolutely brilliant. It's a fantastic triptych with great acting, directing and cinematography. Go and check it out if you're a fan of well constructed dramas. Gosling, Cooper and Mendes are brilliant throughout.

Oblivion.

Was looking forward to this one, but wasnt impressed. Ending was awful too.

Ha! No, just the latest discs from our Cinema Paradiso queue, Carlos the Jackal would be a very different film if it was made by Pixar though! :winking: (and probably better)

Olympus has Fallen (2013) Dir: Antoine Fuqua

Put bluntly, this movie is really no more than an amalgamation of Die Hard and Under Siege, with a dash of tub thumping patriotism from Independence Day thrown in for good measure. However, Fuqua has turned the dials up way past 11 in this 140 minute action packed thriller.

Gerard Butler stars as Branning, a former lead secret service agent on the Presidential detail, currently exiled at the Treasury. It doesn’t really matter why the ex US Army Ranger is no longer on the Detail, but it is important that he is on hand to be the proverbial fly in the ointment, McClane/Ryback style, as a group of unknown terrorists attempt to capture the White House as part of a fiendish world domination plot.

If you are into this film genre, then this movie will certainly not disappoint. There is plenty of gun play, fight scenes and explosions to keep the most demanding of aficionados happy. Nonetheless, it does have a few flaws. Despite 18 months away from the White House, Branning can still remember every single code needed to open or access anything he wants. He also appears to be the only government employee allowed to wear a black shirt at work, which is rather handy when he is sneaking around in the dark.

That said, this is a pretty decent film, but perhaps it will never quite become a classic.

evil dead II 1987, old horror movie where A young man, named Ash, takes his girlfriend Linda to a secluded cabin in the woods where he plays back a professor's tape recorded recitation of passages from the Book of the Dead. The spell calls up an evil force from the woods which turns Linda into a monstrous Deadite, and threatens to do the same to Ash. When the professor's daughter and her entourage show up at the cabin, the night turns into a non-stop, grotesquely comic battle with chainsaw and shotgun on one side, demon horde and flying eyeball on the other. 8.0 out of 10.

Silver Linings Playbook - I'd already read the book so knew the story, but it's still a good film with top acting from all concerned - and Jennifer Lawrence is hot! 7.5/10

Agree with this. It's the film equivalent of a big mac. Not particularly filling or nutritious, but every now and again you crave one and it's pretty enjoyable.

Already went into it with low expectations given it's a Tom Cruise film, enjoyed the first hour or so until all the twists started kicking in and as you say, the ending felt like a lot of other space and Sci-Fi type films.

The Spirit of '45.Ken Loach.
Excellent and moving documentary, which contrasts the post war Attlee era with the Thatcher governments and (the more recent) Occupy movement.
Beveridge must be turning in his grave.
