Mulgrew (not signing)

we were very poor last season and lucky to get away with it with a very lucky run, I for one was looking forward to seeing how our chairman would back our managmnet team in bringing that little bit of extra quality to the squad for this season, to make us that one step stronger and a more complete team. alas we are already playing pre season and in fariness I believe we have a far from stronger team then we had at this point last year, but listen what do I know Im just a self opinionated right wing thug whos very much drinking from the glass thats half empty

Don't be so hard on yourself mate. For a self-opinionated right wing thug with a dodgy glass, I think most of what you've said there is pretty true. I'm pretty sure you won't agree but I still think we haven't got the full picture with regard to Mulgrew yet though, and I really can't believe it's just about the cash. I also think we've still got time to strengthen before the start of the season.

If we DO go into the season with what we have though, it ain't going to be a good one, that's for sure. I think we'll still strengthen.

We're not far away from having a good first XI (need two left-sided players, fairly obviously). We just need to get these numbers into the squad. Our strikeforce is miles ahead of last year and I'm hopeful that we've upgrade in goal, it's the number of bodies in defence and midfield that is the concern.

**** sake this has really ****ed me off now....

No Gower and No Mulgrew.....Great.........Looking forward to seeing Herd and Forshaw rip the league apart.....

Im going to bed now as I am ****ed off.....

I agree with that. My main concern would be our squad depth. I have some concerns about Moussa's ability to dominate games, and Scannell's ability to replace Mark Gower. I'm also concerned about our ability to cover injuries.

As I said above though, I still expect other players to come in.

Disappointed we didn't get him, but at least he didn't pick another L1 team which would have been a real kick in the teeth. Let's hope, and I'm sure they will, that T+B have other targets lined up. Tilly's quote in the Echo about needing 4 players and the positions demonstrated he knows where he wants to strengthen. Therefore one would presume he knows who he's after.

I just wish we'd move a bit quicker than a striking sloth in the transfer market though!!!!

maybe we should avoid a scottish player for the LB position this time.. They all just want to go home!!

League 1 over SPL any day!!!!!

Well that is truly ****ing disappointing. Cannot believe this deal has fallen through: as when he rejected Swindon I thought we would have it in the bag. No idea what has gone on behind the scenes with regards a deal for Mulgrew - but would love to know why this has been cocked up if the player declared he wanted to stay put.

If he wanted to stay put he would still be at Wolves. Being Scottish I expect a move to their top league must have been tempting and one we could not compete with.

Keep the Faith.

Tilson's comments re the Mulgrew situation: -

Southend United OS said:
Tilson also stated that Southend are in urgent need of new faces and also revealed his disappointment at missing out on signing Charlie Mulgrew, who today signed for Aberdeen. "We need to get some players in, as we are almost down to just 12 or 13 players," he said.
"We have nowhere near enough players.

"Charlie Mulgrew was one of the players we were looking to sign, so it is obviously disappointing that he has gone to Aberdeen.
"He had to sort his situation out and do what is right for him. We wish him all the best."

I suddenly have a sinking feling about 08/09 and I just hope the "maillot pois" (in English, polka-dot jersey) won't witness a relegation like the infamous custard splat monstrosity!

At the end of the day, the squads been thread bare for at least a month now... I completely understand the best efforts are being made and that we are doing our level best to bring in players of the right calibre, but going being just under 3 weeks until the new season with 13 players is shocking.

I've yet to see if Herd can make the step-up, and pre-season friendlies are a different level to competitive matches, whether they're against Witham Town or Real Madrid. First game of the season is against Peterborough, who will have George Boyd and Mackail-Smith as well as possibly Aaron McLean... capable of giving an 18 year old on his debut a roasting that he may not recover from.
