Does anyone remember a game at Griffin Park against Brentford, probably in the 60's when Gary Moore scored a "goal" that was disallowed? The ball went into the net but came out the other side due to a hole in the net! I think we lost 2-1 on the night! There was a photo in the local paper afterwards showing the hole in the netting.
I was at the above match it was played on the 10/3/69 the match ended in a 1-1 draw with a goal by Dave Chambers. However you are right in that Gary Moore scored with a header that went through the side netting and the referee gave a goal kick even though the players were telling him/showing him the hole in the side net sadly he would not change his mind.

A foggy midweek cup game back in the 80s against Aldershot; I think it was 8 nil at half time and stayed that way through to the final whistle as no-one bothered in the 2nd half. I think the competition was the predecessor to the JPT.

The score was 10-1, we best Torquay at home in the next round 7-0 after being 7 up at half-time.

The Aldershot and Torquay games in the Leyland Daf were in the 90s (it was 1990-91, our greatest ever season) and Torquay was 0-0 at half-time but we won 7-0.

My Dad wouldn't take me to either.

Southend 3, Hartlepool 2.

They scored in the 43rd minute. Richard Cadette equalised in the 44th. They re-took the lead in the 45th. Richard Cadette equalised again in the 91st, and John Gymer popped up with a winner in the 92nd. Oh, and Richard Cadette had to endure racist abuse (from the Hartlepool fans) from the first minute to the last. It was great to see him stick it to them.

And my Dad decided we should leave on about 85 minutes

That FA cup loss at home to Donny Rovers, when they were in the conference on a awful run and turned us over 0-1

Goal scorer on that day a Mr D Penney

Southend United line-up:
Martyn Margetson, Mark Beard, Rob Newman, Simon Coleman (Trevor Fitzpatrick 69), Simon Livett, Mark Stimson (Nathan Jones 45), Kevin Maher, Alex Burns, Barry Conlon, Derek Whyte (Dave Morley 45), Adrian Clarke.

Subs not used: Mel Capelton, Mick Gooding.

Doncaster Rovers line-up:
Andy Woods, Ignacio Ybarra, Simon Shaw, Ian Snodin, Lee Warren, Steve Nicol, Dino Maamria, Dave Penney, Ian Duerden (Mark Hume 79), Glenn Kirkwood, Tommy Wright. Subs not used: Matty Caudwell, Daniel George, David Jones

Good spot on the goalscorer. And is that a former league title winner with Liverpool in the Donny back four?

Yes I was there and saw the hole in the net

Does anybody remember when we beat Port Vale 5-0 on Good Friday, 1973??? & the following day beat Chesterfield 5-1. I believe Chris Guthrie & Billy Best got 9 of the goals between them!!!!

anyone remember a Milk Cup tie against Wimbledon at Plough Lane. Lost 6-4 after extra time around 1983 i think, was a classic

think same year we won 6-1 at Scunthrpe

also remember the Gills 8-1 followed by Port Vale 6-2, think Gills got 10 goals that week

Maybe tonight will become a match for this thread in the future - a much needed Southend win on a Friday night, bizarre goal from Leonard, three red cards etc etc

On the way to tonight's game I was thinking about this thread and thought of the Stan debut; midweek game and on a cold, damp night ( as tonight V Mansfield); we won 3 nil, with 2 from Paul Brown and a Stan special. I loved Stan; but Paul was a good player too who lost his career from playing too much while injured with shin splints which got beyond healing. Can't remember who we played but I think all the goals were scored at the north bank end.

Weird game vs Preston in about 97 - we were absolute ***** that season and we were 2-0 down inside about 10 minutes. Think it was a night game. Somehow we pulled it back to 2-2 then scored the third just before half-time (Gridelet I think). Then that was that, precisely nothing happened second half and it stayed 3-2. Odd.

Southend 4-1 Brentford in the League One winning season. They were looking good for promotion and we hammered them at Roots Hall and absolutely played them off the park. Che Wilson got the 4th I believe? I remember DJ Campbell scoring an absolute belter in that game. One of the only times in many years at the Hall that I've seen a huge number of home fans stand up and clap an opposition players goal.

The 3-2 win at Swansea when we finished with 8 men was a game that will always stand out for me.
