There was a bloke who used to be part of our BBQ "circuit" would always bring a case of cheap French lager then drink better quality stuff bought by other people. The crate was then ferried onto the next bbq by the previous host as nobody wanted it.

Reminds me of many parties I used to go to some cheapskate ****er would turn up with a party 4 of Watneys Red ****ing Barrel and slurp the decent stuff, and the bloody party 4 would be hanging around for months as nobody could face drinking gnats ****.

Back on topic, it's just bad manners to turn up empty handed, you should always bring beers & wine as a bare minimum. As pointed out earlier you wouldn't normally turn up at a dinner party clutching food.

Bringing some booze is the bare minimum if you ask me. I'd always ask when going to a BBQ if I should bring any food, but I take booze regardless.

A bottle or two at the very least. If I'm going to a BBQ, I always bring round some halloumi cheese as well, goes down a treat.

i think if you invite someone round for a gathering you shouldnt do it expecting them to bring something after all you invited them, however as your poll suggests it is polite to do so, defo. if you invited me round for breakfast would you expect me to bring a tea bag or a slice of bread??

Den, if you've just signed up to make Dave's life uncomfortable, then welcome. Keep up the good work.

Have you ever been tea-bagged before breakfast ?

You never turn up empty handed, got to at least bring some cans or a desert surely!

Could be tough - alright if I just bring a bucket of sand ?
