Memory Lane Southend Town Centre

I remember Millwall fans taking over the Cornucopia about 25 odd years ago self service garlour.

Police brought in the biggest german shepherd you've ever seen in full riot gear, little boots, stab vest and safety hat. Threw it in the back door off the lead and instantly out came about 60 Millwall fans through the front door into the waiting arms of 4 riot vans worth of coppers.

Haha, love it !!

Anyone remember the Millwall game one Easter Monday (unless it's the same game, Hypo?)

They mobbed the seafront. I think the Ivy House, back then (Chinnerys) took the biggest pounding.

Yes was same weekend Andy. They charged the seafront from pier hill towards Kursall hitting/kicking and smashing anything in their way. There were young girls with prams trying to get under the arcade shutters as they came down to get out of the way.

A load of them started with some local lads (well known lads lets say) and after quite a few run ins the locals realised some of the fans had parked (and were sleeping in) a lorry parked behind forresters. So at stupid o'clock in the morning, they set light to the lorry with the Millwall lot inside it.

Lillian Lopez who part formed the band in US of A, died in 2012 you know

Did she!

Native New Yorker (The full 12" version) is one of the great Soul/Disco tracks of the late 70's era.

Think it was Studio 54's flagship choon for about a year.

The Penny Farthing. Is that what became Scamps and then Rain?

I was a member at Zero6 for four years between 1979 and 1983. Often attended Zhivago's as well.

As for Quills, I went in there once, when we couldn't get into TOTS. Remember the plastic glasses and I'm sure the DJ had a coat on, presumably for a quick exit!

Surely a photo of Southend's greatest ever 'wedge' is in order.

I think the FL decided not to arrange that match again for a Bank Holiday!

I've just played 'Inside Out' again. One song that always reminds me of Zero6.

Damn, they made some great songs back in the day.

TOTS was great in those days. They had many a good act some nights. Odyssey was popular and booked a few times. Lou Manzi would throw an after party sometimes. After Olivia Newton John appeared at TOTS, a few tried to pull her at the after party, but she was having none of it, Lol. Most of the acts were pop or disco.

I knew there was a photo somewhere, I just found it. My mate who was there said Olivia N J was really nice, chatting to everyone, and was a good laugh. Took the teasing and banter in her stride.

What a fantastic photograph!

That's my right shoulder there, in the background. :Winking2:

Good to see the 'Miss Lovely' competition is still going in 1973 :-

Love that. Poor old George Walker and his ambitious plans!

Small footnote : Phil Cornwell still lives around the area. His son, Stan, plays cricket for Old Southendians & Southchurch.

And Morgana the mystic lady in the box retired quite some time ago.

Remember seeing a band called Second Image, amongst others, at TOTS

Also Zero6 had some great live bands on a Monday night, including Level 42 one night.

Very good mates with Georgie B (founder and lead of Second Image) and he's a fellow presenter on the radio station I work for. Just released a new album as it happens and will be doing a PA this Friday at The Chichester Hotel, Wickord. :Thumbs up:
