Match: Southend Utd Ladies vs Harlow Town Ladies
Venue: Eastwoodbury Lane, Southend
Date: 9th March 2008
Kickoff: 1:30pm
Conditions: Windy and Cold
SZ Reps: “bluesbloke” and “Southminster_Shrimper”

With rain forecast for later and the current windy conditions, it could be seen as a school boy error that “bluesbloke” arrived by push bike. Still, I guess if you are out to show the Ladies a thing or two fitness has to be right up there along with first touch skills.

“Southminster Shrimper” decided that the car would prove a much more sensible mode of transport and in no way reflects his lack of fitness.

Anyway, on to the game….

Straight from the kick off and Southend have their first chance of the game. A long ball from the kickoff sees Southend on the attack and a decent cross into the box is met with a decent shot on goal. The keeper beaten its unfortunate that the Harlow defence was alive to the ball and headed it off the goal line.

Unfortunately, as so often happens in football a chance at one end and the opposition are straight down the other end with a chance of their own. A fairly tame cross from Harlow and the ball bobbles about between the Southend defender and goal keeper with neither managing to make a decision on what to do leaves Harlow with a simple tap in.
Southend Utd Ladies 0 Harlow Town Ladies 1

On the quarter hour mark and its more success for Harlow. A break down the left which ends in a shot/cross which bounces up to hit the Southend goal keeper on the knee/thigh only to fall to a Harlow forward who tucks it neatly into the bottom right hand corner of the goal.
Southend Utd Ladies 0 Harlow Town Ladies 2

35 minutes into the game and its Harlow again making the most of the play. A cross comes in from the right and an unmarked Harlow forward slots the ball home with a decent finish giving the keeper no chance.
Southend Utd Ladies 0 Harlow Town Ladies 3

Half Time:
Apart from the early opportunity there was little going Southends way in the first half. It seemed the team got a stern talking to from “the boss”. We shall see if that makes the difference needed to get back into the game in the second half. Southend also make a tactical change with one of the twins going in goal and Sarah playing in defence.
Southend Utd Ladies 0 Harlow Town Ladies 3

Second half underway……

On 60 minutes Harlow once again find themselves in the Southend penalty area and with a dipping volley, the ball flies into the top right hand corner of the net leaving the Southend keeper no chance at all. This wasn’t the start to the second half that Southend had hoped for.
Southend Utd Ladies 0 Harlow Town Ladies 4

At last, 75 minutes in and the small but nevertheless good looking crowd had something to applaud. Charelle picks up the ball outside the box and unleashes a dipping shot which loops up into the top right hand corner of the goal off the underside of the crossbar with the Harlow keeper a mere spectator. An excellent goal which left both players and the crowd in a state of some surprise!
Southend Utd Ladies 1 Harlow Town Ladies 4

The remainder of the second half was quite disappointing with Southend having the best of the chances and with a little more composure in front of goal could have got Southend back into the game.

Final Score
Southend Utd Ladies 1 Harlow Town Ladies 4

All in all, a disappointing result as Southend Ladies created some decent chances to get back into the game. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be and Harlow probably deserved their win today.

Ladies of the Match: Sarah and Nicola (aka “The Twins”)
Reason:
Excellent defending throughout the game (although one went in goal for the second half but equally looked composed in that position with good calling and safe hands), broke up many of Harlows attacks with some excellent interceptions, headed clearances and tackles.

I tried to ask them twins out for a steak meal a few matches ago in the groundsman! I have to say I was rejected
