Update -
Thanks to all for both messages on here and the PM's.
Drivers photocard arrived at Solicitors today so I am told despite the fact I sent it recorded next day delivery over a week ago. This to me means on of two things - Either they are bullshitting me and they have had it in the office for ages or Kev (The General) is there postie. Either way its sorted.
I did check with the CII and I could have used my old passport anyway as it turns out but I called my local test centre and they said they hadnt heard that before so I think it would have been hard work.
Anyway thanks to all for the help.
