David Crown- his 17 goals in a struggling side from Nov. 87-May '88 kept us in Div. 3, whilst his ongoing good form helped get us back up in 1990, all this as a forward in the twilight of his career...

Can't argue too much with the Crown choice - his 0.5227 goals per game is slightly superior to Roy's 0.5192. However, he only scored 69 goals in his Blues career - I'll stick with my boy Roy and his 135.

His penalty that went in against Torquay in '85/86 the final match of the season, ensuring we never had to go through re-election of the Football League. Hard to imagine but true.

Oh and he scored 23 goals that season too!

A good shout - a very important goal (one of 72 scored for the Blues in 182 appearances). As I've gone statto anorak bonkers this afternoon, I was interested in seeing who had the best goals per game ratio of our top 20 goal getters.

The top three are:

Jimmy Shankly - 100 goals in 152 games (0.6579 goals per game)
Albert Wakefield - 69 goals in 119 games (0.5798 goals per game)

You will no doubt have guessed that those first two would be up there, but who's heard of this lad at number three?

Freddy Eastwood - 49 goals in 86 games (0.5698 goals per game)

It's tempting at times to forget about Freddy's achievements and his amazing (and regular) goals, and think about his last few months at SUFC and his relative failure to thrive elsewhere, but this man was more responsible than anyone for Blues' successive promotions. When I read these comments saying 'I wouldn't want him back', I am absolutely stunned.

Rusty, we gotta hold our hands up and agree there. Freddy really was a SUFC phenomenon and talk of new stadium would never have come about without us clearing the debts i dare say and Freddy's success led the way.

Of course, there have been good strikers down the years and some people will put forward the likes of David Crown but the lasting effect that Freddy has left us will carry for years i suspect.

I would like to nominate Paul Sansome.

I have always felt that great teams are built from the back, and Sammy was what I would describe as the most solid Keeper I've seen in a Southend shirt. Not often flashy, he could be relied upon to pull of the save.

351 appearances, and two promotions during our most consistent period of achievement, and being part of the side that was a midtable regular at the highest level we have ever played at, deserves a mention in my view!
