Its tough living here at the moment with Gills top of the league currently. I have watched as they have skilfully improved the strength of their squad over the last 2 season in particular. Firstly under Peter Taylor and now Justin Edinburgh. I am sure Barratt will now this well! I am able to retort they wouldnt be where they are without two former Southend Players managing them and have Glen Morris as well as Eganl??!!
Incidentally they brought in 9 players fairly early, ( a factor known to influence league position ) and quite a few with considerable pace!! ugh!!
For your info the research is based on a study of the past 10 seasons albeit in the Premier League, It is not however a large institutional study. It looked at how clubs benefited and won the league by securing players early rather than waiting to later in the transfer window. It concluded that there was a significant connection between the success of winning the league and making early purchases.
I am sorry I cannot provide you with the researchers as I read the articles relating to it in the press. However will look to see if I can find it. No need for the sarcasm though chum
We did well under Tilly with a relatively unchanged squad, but what we did get was The Goat, who was a class above. This time, I agree with you that we haven't invested enough in L1 talent and we are going to rely mainly on L2 players. I really hope Hunt is our Goat this time round but unless PB plays the 442 system, much like Tilly did using a combination of Eastwood, The Goat and Wayne Gray, we will struggle.
We don't really have anyone up front in the mould of Eastwood or The Goat and Gray was as good as anyone we have now. In fact, player for player, the only really quality we have over Tilly's L1 promotion is Bentley if I'm honest

That magical research you forgot to provide in previous threads.
Nothing like staying opinion as fact...
I think PB has done well with his player recruitment this summer. He has replaced the entire strike force with Hunt, Mooney & Piggot till January (Although it looks certain to be made permenant in January). Signed a proven League One player in Wordsworth, and made McLaughlin's loan permenant, which I think it'll prove to be a terrific acquisition. He has managed to retain the majority of players that got us promoted like Timlin.
In defence, Rea is highly rated and plays Under 21 football for Ireland, and O'Neill provides us with competition and cover in defence.
I think the three strikers we have will score goals, along with midfield and defence chipping in along the way as well. I'm certain we will sign a striker on loan, either by Tuesday or once the loan window re-opens.
We've only lost Corr that we wanted to keep, so a good summers work from PB in my eyes.
Just like to mention that analysis I read about the KEY most significant factor that won premiership teams the league was not an opinion of mine but factually based on evidencing the outcomes of league position . The analysis clearly showed that the teams that won the Premiership nearly always got in early , over other teams, for the players they wanted to add to the squad and also achieved an early settled squad. That way they also didn't miss out on the players they really wanted, beating others to it!
I put this out there as an interesting concept for members to consider and it related to a sense at the time that for no doubt many reasons , our club tended to leave it late to strengthen the squad. I accept this research related purely to the Premiership. However I have never heard a Manager state that they like to leave it as Late as possible to get new players in There is one exception of course when some Managers acknowledge in the lower leagues they like to gamble and bargain hunt for that one last good deal. Indeed that is exactly what Justin Edinburgh said recently , although already having established his main new signings.
Entitled to an opinion as a fan of the club. With this squad, I can see us maybe avoiding relegation, at best. I don't care what anyone says, there is a difference in quality between L1 and L2. I appreciate the sentiment for the boys that got us here but we need the strongest squad we can afford and if that means having to cull last years squad, then so be it.
however, always happy to admit when I'm wrong and maybe the boys can start with a Win today....
Your absolutely right including the 3 on loan that's 6 players from the championship and only Mooney from L1.
Take note PB your getting ideas above your station. Sign more players from L1 clubs
Didn't want to start a new thread to raise this point & this seemed an appropriate place to mention it; why don't we seem to have the annual squad photo anymore? Must be a few years since we had one. Is it a thing of the past, or am I just not looking in the right place?
We probably have the strongest squad we can afford.
What you mean to say is 'lets go and spend money we haven't got and end up in the crap again like we did 4 years ago'
No, I didn't mean that. We've extended contracts of players who imo should have been released hence is wasted money. Also, I think you'll find that the cost of shipping back down to L2 is far more costly than bringing in better quality players and extending our stay in L1.
The financial bother started when we had all those players on our books on championship salaries. If we'd have survived in the championship there wouldn't have been a problem, or at least the severity wouldn't have been so intense. This is the main point of FF. if we were to get back in the championship, we'd be restricted by the size of our stadium capacity in terms of ticket sales.
