COCA-COLA LEAGUE TWO UPS AND DOWN
By Ross Heppenstall, PA Sport
A quartet of clubs harbour hopes of being promoted from League Two as
champions this weekend - but not one of them is even guaranteed to go up
automatically. Here, the Press Association looks at the games left, the key men
and the likely outcome at the top of the table.
RELEGATION STATE OF PLAY:
Kidderminster and basement outfit Cambridge have been relegated from League
Two and will ply their trade in the Nationwide Conference next season.
PROMOTION STATE OF PLAY
FIXTURES:
Yeovil - (h) v Lincoln - WIN
Scunthorpe - (a) v Shrewsbury - WIN
Southend - (a) v Grimsby - DRAW
Swansea - (a) v Bury - WIN
Northampton - (h) v Kidderminster - WIN
Darlington - (h) v Cheltenham - WIN
Yeovil require just a point to go up automatically and will guarantee the
League Two title if they beat Lincoln.
However, Scunthorpe, Southend and Swansea also have a chance of being promoted
as champions.
Three of the four teams will win automatic promotion, but are currently
separated by just three points.
Yeovil are on 80 points, with Scunthorpe a point behind and Southend and
Swansea both on 77 points.
KEY GAME
Yeovil v Lincoln
WHAT WILL HAPPEN: Yeovil have a superb home record and host a Lincoln side who
are already assured of a place in the play-offs for the third consecutive
season. With a carnival atmosphere set to engulf Huish Park, Gary Johnson's side
are unlikely to slip up with the prized silverware within touching distance.
KEY PLAYER: Phil Jevons (Yeovil)
VERDICT: Yeovil win 2-0 and secure automatic promotion in style by going up as
champions. Lincoln will already be eyeing up the play-offs.
KEY GAME
Shrewsbury v Scunthorpe
WHAT WILL HAPPEN: Scunthorpe are bang in form and have collected 10 points
from their last four matches, scoring 10 goals in the process. A point may not
be enough to take Brian Laws's side up automatically, but a win will guarantee
it.
KEY PLAYER: Paul Hayes (Scunthorpe)
VERDICT: Scunthorpe to beat a workmanlike Shrewsbury side 2-0. The Shrews are
safe from relegation and already looking forward to their summer holidays.
KEY GAME
Grimsby v Southend
WHAT WILL HAPPEN: Southend have faltered badly since their LDV Vans Trophy
final defeat to Wrexham on April 10, losing three and winning just one of their
next four matches. However, they remain on course for automatic promotion should
they emerge victorious at Blundell Park - but their hopes lie on a knife edge if
Swansea enjoy a high-scoring victory at Bury.
KEY PLAYER: Freddy Eastwood (Southend)
VERDICT: Southend are lacking form and confidence and with Grimsby eager to
end their home campaign on a high, a tight stalemate could ensue - potentially
destroying the Shrimpers' automatic promotion hopes.
KEY GAME
Bury v Swansea
WHAT WILL HAPPEN: Swansea will only be automatically promoted to League One if
they achieve a better result than Southend or Scunthorpe. Kenny Jackett's side
need to go for a high-scoring victory and hope that is enough - and it could
well be.
KEY PLAYER: Lee Trundle (Swansea)
VERDICT: Swansea to snatch a dramatic victory at Gigg Lane courtesy of striker
Lee Trundle. The game is essentially meaningless for Bury - but the stakes could
hardly be higher for Swansea.
