Seeing glasgowsufc's signature made me think... "hey, there's a great idea for a fun thread on a Friday!"...

So, what are your top ten games watching the Shrimpers?

This is an entirely subjective exercise, of course - just a little bit of fun, so we can all relive some happy moments we've had watching the mighty SUFC.  There's no need to give a reason behind your selection, but if you want to (as I did!), then keep it brief!

I was there - what a terrible trip that was... the Trust coach was like a wake on the way back!

Not sure about top ten, but I still think the best game I've seen watching the Shrimpers was a 4-4 draw on a friday night at home to York City, Adrian Clark scoring two absolute screamers.

How cool, a thread based on my signature, that's made my day!

I'll post my 6-10 & reasons for all 10 later!

The first one excepted, these aren't in any particular order...(Southend's score first, even for away games)

1) 2-0 vs Lincoln, 2005 play-off final. Obvious really
2) 1-0 vs Derby, 1987 Littlewoods Cup. McDonough slotting home a penalty past Shilton!
3) 0-1 at Coventry, 1998 Coca Cola Cup. A great battling performance at a then decent Prem'ship club
4) 2-0 at Orient, 2001. A very happy birthday. Who let the Abbey out?
5) 1-1 vs Col Ewe, LDV Vans Trophy 2004. Relief and joy in equal measure
6) 4-0 vs QPR, LDV Vans Trophy 2004. Four nil? FOUR NIL?
7) 2-1 at Macclesfield, 2005. Last minute goal away to a promotion rival. Fantastic
8) 2-1 vs Scunthorpe, 1985. The start of a beautiful friendship...
9) 3-2 vs Luton, FA Cup 2001. A proper cup tie!
10) 0-2 vs Blackpool, LDV Vans Trophy 2004. So we lost. Great day though wasn't it?

Good call to add a worst game.  I'm going to vote for:

Opponent            Venue        Date         Result
Bolton Wanderers  Roots Hall   12 Jan 94   0-2

I have never seen the Shrimpers so consistently have the p*ss taken out of them as Bolton did that day.  They were effectively treating the game as a training session, knocking it round in little triangles between themselves using the minimum of effort.  They only bothered to expend the energy to attack us twice, it seemed, and they scored on both occassions.  It was as if we were running around with lead in our boots; and, as the fog got thicker, so the crowd got quieter and quieter.

Desperate.

Oxford away this season was probably the lowest point recently for me...

10) 24/9/94 Bolton (H) 2-1 Otto, Thomson - my 1st game in the new South Stand, team played like they finally got what Taylor was on about after 6 months of false starts (also memorable for Richard Sneekes strike, best away goal I've ever seen at the Hall)
9) 27/3/04 Carlisle (A) 2-1 Constantine (2) - it took 40 years but we finally won at Brunton Park & I was one of the 100 or so who witnessed it!
8) 26/12/95 Norwich (A) 1-0 Jones - memorable for the Chase Out protests & a bumper away support of 4,000 who didn't shutup for the whole 90 mins as well as the snow on my way home (took over 2 hours to get down the A140)
7) 22/2/93 Sunderland (H) 2-0 Angell, Jones - the day an interest became a love affair, also the day of the Jobson Out & All Sit Down We're NOT going to Basildon demo
6) 20/4/96 Ipswich (H) 2-1 Dublin, Marsh - A 91st minute wonderstrike from Marshy almost caused me to fall out of the front row of the South Upper!  Made even sweeter as I was living & working in Ipswich at the time.

Reasons for 1-5:
5) A dire game for 71 mins until they scored, then we equalised & scored & scored & scored.  The most frantic 20 mins of football I've seen (until the Playoff Final)
4) Stan at his most dangerous, seeing all those goals on the Collymore DVD made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck, Frank Skinner also showed one as his favourite Stanley goal on his chat show.  Also, the cheek of the North Bank with the One Billy Ocean chants at the Rovers sub
3) Being 0-1 down for 87 mins then getting a 90th minute equaliser & a 93rd minute winner sent the away terrace mental.  Plus seeing my rather large (18st) 60 year old Dad being picked up & embraced by a total stranger was also rather a surreal experience
2) Need I say anymore (those who were there know exactly why)
1) The closest SUFC have ever been to TOTAL football, if Fry had stayed then I really feel we would have made the Premier$hite

Low points:
Probably Oxford (A) 0-5 in 96, think we were 4 down in half an hour as well as Chesterfield (H) on a Friday night towards the end of the 97/98 season, the only time I've ever walked out of the Hall before the final whistle. Both were total clueless shambles.

Here we go:

1) Play-off Final Vs Lincoln (Won 2-0) - My first ever promotion and the best day of my life.

2) LDV Southern Area Final Second Leg Vs C********r (Drew 1-1) - Drewenaldo scoring the goal that took us to Cardiff for our very first time.

3) FA Cup 3rd (?) round Vs Luton (Won 3-2) - Tes plays his best match and him and Rawle looked like a quality partnership up front. Tes scores over head kick winner with 5 minutes to go.

4) FA Cup 1st (?) Round Replay Vs Canvey (Won 3-2) - Live on Sky. The nation looking for an FA Cup upset, even though Canvey were the faviourites. Up steps Jay Smith with two fanastic finishes, one being in the last minute. Cue hugging people I've never met. What a first away match.

5) LDV Southern Area Semi Final Vs QPR (Won 4-0) - QPR were top of Division 2 and cruising. We'd suffered a 2-0 defeat the weekend before to Donnie, who'd scored 2 in the first 10 minutes and could have scored at will. Steven Clark has his best ever SUFC match and scores a peach.

6) League Two Vs Swansea (Won 4-2) - At home to the team with the best defensive record in the division and top of the league. An un-heard of non-league player upfront for us. 7.7 seconds, enter Freddy Eastwood. A hat trick on his professional debut and the fastest ever SUFC goal. Chants of top of the league, who having a laugh for 90 minutes. Brilliant.

7) League Two Vs Darlington (Won 2-0) - This was a massive game for us. They were hot on our heels and in form. Two ex-Premier$hite forwards upfont with Hignett just behind. The crowd was pumped up for his from the start. Freddy's pass of the season into Bentley who scores the first and Eastwood claims the second from a Gower assist. All this just after the manager was sent to the stands and on his mobile to his assistant. Brilliant.

8) LDV Southern Area Final Second Leg (Drew 2-2) - A game full on tension. We were 2-1 up from the first leg and Bristol Rovers were up for it. Gray and Eastwood scoring the goals that booked another LDV Final and another appearance at Cardiff.

9) LDV Final Vs Blackpool (Lost 2-0) - Wasn't a brilliant match, but seeing over 20,000 Shrimpers in the crowd was very moving. A brilliant, once in a life time (Or so we thought) opportunity. Seeing Southend United in a Cup Final appearance. Tears were in my eyes during the National Anthem.

10) Division Three Vs Scunthorpe (Won 4-2) - A pre-18th birthday treat for me. Mum booked a box for us and had 9 of my best mates in there with me. Was abused the whole time on the way there and before the kick off because they thought we'd lose. Had three Spurs fans, one Arsenal fan, one C********r fan, two Man Utd fans and two other people that didn't follow football. Every single one of them said how well we played that day. Made me very proud. Meet Drewenaldo after the game as well.

that Carlisle game away was a bit special, probably made number 11 for me- let down by the fact i had to sit next to barry for 17 hours on the coach

My worst, although the mid 80's has been wiped from my mind so there could well be a couple of Bobby Moores finests I am stiil too traumatised to remember, was the anihalation away at Crystal Palace in the 90's (I think Wright and Bright were still together), Roycie kept it in single figures.....

Mind you I didn't go to Gillingham away (0-8 ?)

Lets keep this thread for good memories only - someone createa a worse games thread.

Are you not getting confused with two different Palace thumpings?

One was in the League Cup (think it was the Rumbelows Cup back then) when Wrighty & Brighty were together, either 89 or 90.

The 2nd was a League match in Sept 96 when we got thumped 6-1 & Roycie managed to keep it down to single figures
