Not sure if this is the right area, so mods please move if needed...

I need help with my wife's Toyota, it is a MY2008 Verso T180 D4D

About a year ago we started experiencing problems with v.poor MPG, and poor performance with the car eventually going into 'limp' mode. I booked it into a Toyota main dealer, but on my way there the error code cleared and it was back to normal. I spoke with the main dealer mech. and he ran a diagnostics check and could not find any errors and said the 2.2 Toyota turbo diesels are generally poor when it comes to MPG.

About 2 months later it happened again, very poor acceleration and could barely get the car to go more than 30mph, which was quite scary when pulling out onto a fast dual carriageway. I then read that the EGR may be blocked, so I stripped it down and it was totally blocked with carbon and was not opening and closing. After stripping it and cleaning it the car drove spot on, pulling well through all gears. MPG was still poor so I bought a bottle of DPF and fuel system cleaner, which I was advised should clean any deposits - at this point the car was not going through the usual re-gen, so I presumed the DPF was the problem.

The problem was intermittent and I regularly give it an 'Italian' tune up and my wife drives a lot of short distances, which is not good for any oil burner...

OK, so then about a month later the car starts becoming very erratic, with large plumes of white / grey smoke, loads of it sometimes, which was really noxious and in heavy traffic caused some real issues at one point when my wife was driving it it engulfed the car. Not sure if the car was over-fuelling or something.

I don't generally trust OEM dealers so I took it to a local mechanic who has serviced my cars previously, but they weren't really able to pinpoint the issues and typically when they drove it it was fine?

I've recently had the car fully serviced, including fuel filter, I have cleaned the MAF sensor, re-flashed the ECU etc. Which did fix the issues temporarily, but it's still quite smokey and experiencing intermittent power loss.

My concern is it could be the DPF (£1.5k), Cat (£1k) injectors (£1k+) to fix, but really need to get a diesel specialist or independent Toyota mech.

Any suggestions or are you a mechanic near to Southend who could help me out? Really want to avoid any major expenditure with Christmas coming up... And I know I can trust you guys :-)

thanks

Try Westfield Motors over Rawreth way ... Use them for the wife's Yaris and daughter's Yaris. Nice people.
