My ratings

Flahavan 6.5 - came for crosses in his 6 yard box and generally looked compotent, other than spilling one shot leading to lots of dodgy keeper chants from the Donny fans. One well-timed tackle after a woeful Hunt back-pass
Hunt 5 - seemed to get repeatedly confused by the fact that the touchlines were so far inside from the edge of the grass pitch. Had a good chance to score but his shot was as Broughtonesque as his boots.
Wilson 6 - shows how bad we were when everyone else dropped down to his level
Barrett 6 - quiet game, last season he would have tried to have woken the team up with a few barnstorming runs, but at the higher level has his hands full dealing with the defensive side of his game
Edwards 6 - a typical steady Eagle performance. Not so much "if in doubt, put it out", as "have no doubt, he'll put it out"
Bentley 5 - with Benno off form, we again struggled, showing how important he is to the team.
Maher 6.5 - our best player for the early part of the game, getting stuck in and winning lots of ball, before fading in influence and losing his rag
Guttridge 6.5 - anonymous for 25 minutes, it was no coincedence that our best spell was when he was at his most influential, but ultimately Donny by-passed the midfield and Gutts was unable to exert much control
Cole 6 - promised more than he delivered, before being subbed having made little second half impact
Goater 5 - not given much service, but not helped by his inability/unwillingness to go for any ball not straight where he wants it
Gray 5 - he has such good physical attributes that he can look like a world beater at times, sadly he lacks the mental attributes to back up the physical aspect and he looked bereft of confidence (the result of being subbed the previous Sunday despite playing well?). He might as well have been subbed after 20 minutes on saturday, because he spent the game moping about and even when put clear dithered and allowed the keeper to save.

Subs
Eastwood 6 - at least tried to make things happen even if it never came off
JCR 4 - played about 10 minutes and didn't once find a Southend shirt
Lawson 7 - only played a couple of minutes but was the only one who didn't look lethargic. Looked full of running and showed a willingness to anticipate and not merely react - if only the starting XI had done likewise

Away support - 4. If the player's performances were lethargic/complacent so was the crowd. Even before the game the atmosphere was flat. Open terraces may not be ideal for singing, but at least we could try. The atmosphere on the terraces was like we felt that we only had to turn up to collect another 3 points and that complacency found its way onto the pitch. We need to get behind the team and try and inspire them, rather than sitting back waiting to be entertained. The closest we got to any sustained singing was probably a rendition of "duh, duh, duh, Freddy Eastwood" when he was warming up. That probably helped Wayne Gray's confidence no end.

That is something that I've grown to hate.

yea ,have to agree maybe a few choruss' of "Wayne Gray is the new Pele" might not go amiss ?? he is our top scorer so far this season and has responded well to the competition and i feel he is a real "confidence" player and knowing that us punters rate him might help him and as a result the team and therefore all of us will benefit

Think everyone knew the way we were playing at that stage we never looked liked scoring and Freddie was our only real hope of creating a chance (in the end we still never looked scoring in the 2nd half). The general consensus around me was that everyone thought it would be Goater coming off not Gray

Problem is, so is Freddy. It's actually quite a tough scenario Tilly has at the moment. I think Tuesday night is a good time to put Eastwood and Gray on together, giving Goater the rest it sounds like he needs.

I personally never like to see a manager change a team around on the strenth of one performance, though we have not been playing great the last few games. LDV game has come at exactly the right time IMHO.

Bit too much doom and gloom on here isnt there? Reading some of the comments Im not sure i was at the same match as everybody else. The first 45 minutes, in my opinion, is some of the best football we have played in our 8 match winning run, and to say we never looked like scoring is bizaare? Gray had a one on one, Cole had a shot very well saved by the keeper and then another chance he completely miss hit, Hunt had a cross shot which should have been better, but was almost turned in, and Gray had a good headed chance.

The second half I agree wasnt that great, but then again, neither team were that great in the second half, and only a wonder strike made the difference.

Doncaster are no mugs, and looked a lot better than Gillingham and Forest did, and they will not be too far away from the playoffs come the shake up in May.

Thought the turnout was excellent, not sure of figures, but to me looked like between 6-800, although the atmosphere, as always with an open end, was a bit pants.

Agree with the comments re the fans constantly chanting Freddie's name and not paying much attention to Gray. He is a confidence player, and his confidence dipped quite a bit after missing the one on one chance, bu the fans should have got behind him more then when he needed it.... Its not all about Eastwood all of the time.... And as for people saying he should have started, why should he? wWe've won 8 on the bounce and he hasnt played a large part in that. He, and everyone else, have to realise he does not have a God given right to play, and will have to wait his turn like everyone else.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and to say we would have won if he had started is easy now, but on the other hand, we may have got beat 4-0 if he had started, so who knows.

My ratings as follows:-

Flahavan - 7 - Looked competent, and aside from one sticky moment, was fine. No chance with either goal

Hunt - 4 - Had one of those afternoons he would rather forget. And didnt get anywhere near Forte when he came on.

Wilson - 7 - One of his best of the season and the pick of the back line for me

Barrett - 5 - Thought he looked nervy and unsure all afternoon, he isnt the same Barrett that played for us last season

Edawards - 6 - Did most of what was asked of him, although the odd misplaced clearance didnt help!

Cole - 6 - Excellent first half, which should have been capped with a goal. Faded in the second half, but always a threat, and tracked back well.

Maher - 5 - Thought his passing and set pieces were poor, his mouth got him yet another yellow card and was Discussing at other when it was his inadequacies which were the problem

Gutteridge - 8 - Man of the match, in the first half, he was magnificent. Didnt give the ball away, and Donny's midfield just couldnt deal with him

Bentley - 6 - typical all action display from benno, but not as effective as usual

Goater - 5 - Needs a rest I think. Seems a bit off the pace at the moment, although did setup Gray for his one on one with a lovely flisk

Gray - 6 - Looked a threat until his missed chance, after that, lack of confidence got the better of him.

Subs

Eastwood - 6 - Ran around a lot, but not to much effect. More to do with lack of service than any fault on his part

Campbell Ryce - 5 - Little or no impact, although needs more time in the team to show us what he can do

Lawson - 6 - Not enough time to really make an impression

Overall dissapointed to have lost, but I certainly wont be losing too much sleep after losing our first game in 8, whilst were 2nd in the league and 8 point ahead of 4th place!!

Quote[/b] ]Hunt 4 - Stinker, come back Juppy

Pboreham, the disappointment of missing any Southend United match is made up slightly by reading yours and Fbm's reports and ratings which tend to give a decent reflection on the game.

BUT, this week you have let yourself down. Fair enough giving Hunt a 4, by the sounds of it he had a mare but wasn't it you, who last week Vs Forest, gave him man of the match and was signing his praises? You don't turn into a bad player or a bad team over night, so isn't calling for Jupp to come back into the side a bit premature? Yes he had a poor game, but everyone will have a poor game other the course of the season and will all probably have a superb game. So lay of him and get behind the lads.

From the perspective of someone who didn't go:

-> What made someone decide to have a wedding reception in a room with no signal?
-> Why did it then take so long to find signal?
-> Was it worth finding?
-> We're all aware we haven't necessarily played that rgeat in our winning run so it was inevitable that a team would come at us sooner or later when we weren't too hot.
-> I've thought for a while that if an opposition player slams a long range effort in or it takes a deflection and we go behind, we may well lose. We have had the rub of the green a little in our run.
-> From the perspective of an armchair viewer of the game and table, there is absolutely nothing to worry about. We're one behind 1st and 9 ahead of the playoffs. There are 22 teams in this league who would love our position regardless of the last performance.
-> Didn't see Goater's performance but I feel that away from home, we should play him as he is the most experienced and Gillingham seemed to suggest Eastwood and Gray don't work together so well away from home.
-> Also not a big fan of chanting a sub's name all the time. It's obvious to the players who will be replaced.

A spot on summary - thanks for saving me the hassle of posting something similar.

I think a few people should read Matt Walker's (aka Matt the Shrimp) article in the Notts Forest programme. Two years ago, almost to the day, we lost 2-0 at home to an abysmal Boston side in front of 2,600 odd. The defeat sent us into the League Two relegation zone.

The progress we've made in two years is simply unbelievable. A defeat to a wonder goal, in a game we could have (with some decent finishing/good luck) had wrapped up by half-time shouldn't cloud that.
