Brilliant support and,

Poor Old Wiggy!
All this vitriol hurled at him whenever he makes a comment on here. Unlike him I was at the game yesterday and he is basically correct in his comments. It was never and should never have been about yesterday, the title/promotion was not lost yesterday it was lost when we could not beat Orient or Oxford (and haven't they been on form since?).
Yeovil and Grimsby were always going to be hard but it should have been sewn up long before. Yes the team played "vigorously" yesterday but from the outset it was clear that panic had set in and there was little guile just blind, unco-ordinated cavalry charges.
I hate to "criticise" Tilson (do I dare?) but his quotes that the players weren't feeling the pressure were surely smokescreens. I think our manager's inexperience has been exposed in the last few games.
If I am gutted (which I am) it is probably due mostly to my own stupidity in falling into the "we're going to win the division" camp along with many others, I am old enough to have known better.
I think our season is over now. The players have looked exhausted in the last few games and I doubt they have anything left to give. As to our Cobblers play-off, Northampton are a team on the up, form wise, we are on a downward path and look to have run out of ideas and self belief. And I wonder just how many would be willing to make a third, expensive, trip to Cardiff if we were to make it? It would be embarrassing to be outnumbered by Macclesfield fans.
I really CAN'T face another two Orient games, but no doubt will have to brace myself.

Flame away.

well said wiggy, we always go on about this board being a matter of opinions and yet when someone puts something on here negative then you jump on his back.

he is 100 percent right, we have screwed up bigtime and i for think that it will be a very long time before we get into this position again, there needs to be some serious looking at players being paid up for their contracts, because at the moment we look like a team looking to the bottom rather than the top. the scenario next season looks very bleak, stuck with the same players like maher gower jupp and gray no eastwood, no barratt unless he gets the captains armband!!!

the falloff factor will be immense next season, not many will pay £18 on matchdays and i think we will struggle to attract crowds of over 4,000 and even if we do get to the top of the table, the fans wil not come back as they have seen us choke now twice in finals and over the last 5 games.

sorry if you dont like it, but its my view, and i think we should looking to stay up next season, and it could be close

one good thing though yesterday was our fans i am proud that we fronted them on the pitch, brought back a tear to my eye, gosh i wonder how many fans broke the law yesteday

I think we have the nucleus of a good squad, I can see some of the fringe players like Eagle and Nicky being cast aside in the summer cull but I'm pretty confident we can hold on to most of the current squad. I think it's a bit extreme to predict a relegation dogfight next season. Do you think Yeovil fans were predicting doom and gloom after they missed out on the playoffs last season?

Hang on a mo. I think Wiggy is being unfairly chastised here. It's not as if we made a late surge from mid-table, couldn't quite make the final fence and have had to settle for fourth. We threw away our automatic promotion spot, one which we had occupied for the previous six weeks, because we were simply not good enough to last the race. Four defeats in three weeks does not make a promotion side, especially when the Shrimpers previously lost their previous four in over four and half months. Wiggy is simply sounding out what we all know ~ that we have been found wanting, fourth is all we deserve and that at the end of the day we simply didn't have the bottle to fight to the very end ...

no one's saying that this isn't so Mike. It's just $%&*# like Wiggy want to forget the times we've played well. He really is the sort of fan I hate (and one who always seems to be sitting near me). A whinging wining $%&*

Ah, the exhilarating power of reasoned debate.

You may be right, only time will tell on that one but that's exactly why we should enjoy what we've got now. There were four teams up there and only 3 promotion places, somebody had to end up in the playoffs.

There'll be plenty of time for the post mortem WHEN the season is over but for now the players still need our support. I know I said I don't think we'll go up now but that was my head talking, my heart will cling to the dream until the final whistle goes on our season be that at Roots Hall or the Millenium Stadium.

And for what's it's worth, I thought Jupp had a really good game yesterday.

No! Only since 1968.

I am also sure I saw a post that pointed to wiggy being of the female variety. Unless wiggy is really 'Just a Laaddyyyy'

It's not his views that are the bane of our messageboard lives, it's the unfaltering negativity after every slip. Every time I wander in depressed from some disappointment, there's always one more post that can plunge you deeper in to despair. If the unique brand of realism was present when we won, I'd happily concede that it swings both ways. However, I feel there is a lack of realistic expectations behind the realistic comments. Frankly, the original post was no better than the Grimsby fans goading us on the pitch and outside the ground.

As for mindless cavalry charges, these mindless cavalry charges made us a plethora of fantastic opportunities in both halves that we failed to convert. Hitting the woodwork, by the way, means you went pretty close.

And as for the notion that over 46 games we weren't good enough, well, that's something we have to live with. We finished fourth over 46 games meaning we are the fourth best team in the division. 4 teams go up so now we have to prove we are the fourth best team in the league as the league position suggests. We have a cracking record against all of the playoff teams, one of them being the only team we seem to be able to beat whilst on a terrible run.

We didn't lose and we're not out of it. Why talk like the season's finished and we're playing Orient next year when we're in mini-cup for promotion still that most teams in the league would give their East Stand for?

Come on people, let's put this in perspective - Tilly has openly said throughout the season that he was realistically aiming mid table finish. For Tilly and Brush to transform us from a team deep in relegation trouble, and to take us to two cup finals, a potential tie against Chelsea, and to top of the league in less than two seasons is nothing short of astonishing.

Yes, it's disappointing we've missed out on the autos, but I bet after our first match against Cheltenham, no one could have expected we'd be where we are now. So come on, let's all get behind the team for one last push. Have faith, we can do this!

Wiggy isn't always wrong but it is his reactionary response to everything that I find irritating. I'm sure I'm right in saying that after Cardiff he was the loudest voice on here castigating Gower for his admittedly dreadful performance (of course forgetting everything positive that Mark has done in the past 18 months) but post-Grimsby he is now suggesting that Tilson got his tactics 'all wrong' by leaving 'our most creative player' Gower on the bench. It is these obvious inconsistencies and the 'I told you so' 'after-the-event' reactionary responses that does my head in.

Having read back through his posts on this thread, I have to withdraw some of my support for Wiggy. Personally I still think we deserved what we got, i.e. fourth place, and maybe Wiggy means that as well ... he just doesn't put it across effectively ...

For me the gutted feeling left after I got over defeat by Yeovil. That was when my dream of the title faded. I thought I would feel devastated after failing to secure promotion but I now sit at my pc feeling drained but happy with what has been the most exciting season ever for me. I will be going Northampton as I have not missed any of the final 7 or so games and would hate to miss the moment we do the business. I refuse to let Wiggy or anyone else ruin my day. If we blew it, I enjoyed the ride, and Wiggy can feel as ****ed as he likes. I feel great. 2 more (or 3) games to enjoy, laugh, cheer and cry over. Wallet on an introvenace drip, wife in despair at the cost of it all but hey, I have loved every minute of it, and, I will continue to love it until it's all over.

COME ON YOU MIGHTY SHRIMPERS

Incidentally, if a lucky deflection in the opponent's penalty area had fallen to (or at least Eastwood) rather than Yeovil, we would have been champions.
