Have now read the wiki article which confirms that and elaborates that he was also the first to concede a goal in a shoot out. George Best scored that first one and he saved from Denis Law - what a couple of players to share records with!
I recall seeing him take a penalty at Roots Hall. He was a sturdily built chap who could kick a ball quite hard. He hammered his kick against the bar, rebounding as far as the half way line and an opposing goal was only just averted while he trundled back. I don't believe he took any more penalties. I'd be obliged (and surprised) if anyone could remind me what match it was?
