An excellent evening's entertainment watched by a crowd of 415 at Portman Road.
The 5-4 defeat didn't of course really matter and it would have been nice to have come away with a point which after good spells in the middle bits of both halves we probably deserved. Oddly despite conceding 5 the defence were reasonably good, its just that Town's attackers were too quick and put through some excellent passing to split our defence.
As per the first string though we fell down in the last 10 mins - we were leading 3-2 before that (having been 2-0 down), Hoop's last minute effort for our fourth was right at the end.
The team:
GK Nathan McDonald: haven't seen him before, one or two nice stops but a bit short a la Flav's, though not really at fault for the goals.
RB: Lewis Hunt, skipper for the night but didn't seem to relish the prospect and couldn't see him directing his troops. Did ok playing-wise.
LB: Che Wilson, ok-ish, got mullered a bit by Jaime Peters though he is speedy enough to test most.
CB: Simon Francis, commanding and actually looked quite comfortable in the middle. A good option for there me thinks if Barrett, Richards and Clarke keep insisting on going AWOL after 85 mins.
CB: Zoltan Liptak, look promising at times with good distibution, and with his height is good in the air, though prone to a few lapses. A prospect for the future though with more match practice.
MF: Mark Gower, played much of the match in the middle, at times looked short on effort though oddly seemed to pick it up towards the end. Took a bad knock second half but seemed to shake it off.
MF: Franck Moussa: quality distribution for the most part, just worries me still that he is too raw for the first team and prone to the odd lapse/over-ambitous pass.
MF: Peggy Lokando, who I'm told is who we have on loan from Arsenal youth. Looked a good prospect, constant effort, some forgiveable inexperienced lapses. Worth keping him on if we have the chance for a longer look.
MF: Richie Foran, oh dear. This should have been his chance to shine, but he failed. Constantly lost the ball and ran into channels leading no where. Kept staring at others though it was their fault - take some responsibility for your own actions Mr F. A long spell in the stiffs beckons.
S: Gary Hooper, two goals which he took well from close in and looked determined, just doesn't have the pace to really trouble folk though.
S: Eric Odhiambo, looked to posses some class, excellent first goal running clear to strike home from 22 yds, and bothered their defence a bit in spells but not much service due to lack of width in the team and drifted out of the game as a result. Some neat flicks.
I reckon there were about 15 - 20 SUFC fans there. Tilly and Brush were present though we only knew that as we bumped in to them coming out of the ground, they looked a bit glum but needn't have, I thought overall we did well against a very quick Ipswich team which in Legwinski, Smith, Peters, Clarke, Bowditch and Richards had a fair amount of Championship experience.
Odd thing was Tilly & Brush watched soley from the stands - not sure who our man was on the bench (he had a sponge). Probably explains why none of the subs used (all youngsters - Hopkins, Forshaw, Thurlbourne, Henry).
Good to meet CC51DAS (thanks for the pint!) and to find out why he is called that (too suttle for me!).
