THE ASHES

Was trying to think what a football equivalent could be....

England v Germany. Fierce rivalry. Two leg qualifier game. Losing 0-4 from the first leg and rightly written off. Pull it back to 2-4 then have to play the last half hour with your last choice defender playing alongside your star striker up front to secure the 5-4 win?

Can't remember enjoying an innings as much since, well, 1981!

Great stuff, thoroughly enjoyed it! Quality from Stokes and a huge pat on the back for Jack Leach too.

England 67 all out. :Frustrated:

England have a master plan, we are luring them into a false sense of security, :Thumbs up:

Told you England had a master plan, I give you Ben Stokes.

Stokes meaning

The cgs unit of kinematic viscosity, corresponding to a dynamic viscosity of 1 poise and a density of 1 gram per cubic centimetre, equivalent to 10 square metres per second.

Or

To poke, stir up the ASHES, and feed a fire.

To relive the moment here is

8 Minutes of Highlights

What a performance

Astonishing innings from Stokes and one which will be revisited for the next 30 years at least. Have to feel a bit for Lyon as he had Stokes caught on back leg knocking middle stump out but the one consistent has been the umpiring and true to form the biggest decision of the match is called incorrectly and a few balls later England have a famous win.
Australia played better over the course of the match and still lost which gives England all the momentum going to Manchester, I just hope they look at this in the cold light of day and realise they really should be out of the Ashes but for Stokes heroics.
Roy hasn't contributed in six innings now, Buttler hardly and Woakes looks totally ineffective unless there is sideways movement - it's those three I would be looking to replace.

How about Curran and Jimmy in and drop Woakes and Buttler, any ideas on an opener anybody?

How about a few comments on the plumb LBW not given by that useless West Indian umpire,if that wasnt plumb then Lbw should be outlawed,And capt paine needs to let someone else do the reviews.Hes useless.

Tracking was wrong as it tracked after it hit Stokes front pad.

Still even if it was plumb, cheer up because the Aussies brought the game of cricket into disrepute in order to falsely win the Ashes.....Ben Stokes has restored the game all on his own in one English Summer......Even the Aussies will reap the rewards and just maybe they might learn their lesson and be a far better nation.

Well done the Western Terrace. Showed true support from ball one. It inspired the home team and rattled the smug ones.

Some of our fans could learn a lesson and that would greatly improve RH. If you love your cricket or even like live sport you really should spend a day in the West stand Headingley......Greatest place to watch a Test.......In the World.

What a finish, didn't think I could multitask but managed to score the game I was playing in and watch the finish on sky go at the same time

Grapes are very sour this year,it was not LBW the Umpires decision is final if there is no referrals left, those are the rules Bruce.

What a stupid last revue by the Aussies. Almost as bad as Broads one earlier.
Was obvious something would 'happen' before the finish and they should have saved it.

The wonderful joy of cricket is the pressure builds ball by ball over time....Time you don't get in other sports and its all about holding your nerve. Not just those with a bat or ball, they actually have something to focus on. There can be more pressure on captains and those in the field. One bad decision or one drop/missed run out can lose the match and you don't get a chance to redeem yourself.

The one person you can't blame in Cricket is the manager......Its the 11 on the pitch and no one else.

INCREDIBLE!..............AS LONG AS WE LEARN SOMETHING FROM IT!
Exciting, riveting, magnificant it may have been but was it Test cricket??? Smash, bang ,wallop was what we have become used to in the one day game but it will lose you more Tests and Ashes series than you will ever win. Stokes's performance yesterday was sensational but maybe the most hopeful sign for the next two Tests was our batting performance on Saturday night and up to lunchtime on Sunday. There weren't the thrills of yesterday afternoon but there was an application and concentration which is required at that level. If we had batted with that care in the first innings we probably wouldn't have needed Stokes to dig us out of the VERY deep hole we had got ourselves into. Certainly, that may have deprived us of yesterday's record-breaking knock but I'll take victory in the Ashes with a few less thrills than yesterday and with something that more resembles a Test batting performance in the last two games.

Agreed but what a crowd puller that match was. There is a fine line between what is perceived to be the modern version of entertainment and good old fashioned Test cricket. I am old school but this type of cricket may well be the future in this new generation of support for the game. It is a tricky argument. Whatever it is, or will be it was b. exciting!

No sour Greapes at all i thought it was a tremendous fight back and a good game of cricket , just wondered why not one of you mentioned that LBW decision ,its because every single one off you knew it was plumb and you were lucky.WHy do you think i mentioned Tim Paine ,he is really not a captain, should never have the job.

Many said that about one of England finest Mike Brearley as captain

Tim Paine would have been an hero if (a) The dropped catch in the deep had stuck (b) Lyons bottle had not gone and missed a stumping that Stevie Wonder would have made (c) The last review would have been done with bowler and not just him, he does not have angles, slow mo, three looks at the ball, its a one off and in the heat of the battle, can understand the review

It wasn't plumb as it was a tough call for an umpire as wasn't obvious if it flicked him on his front pad before it hit his backpad. But the Aussies have only got themselves to blame for burning their last review on a ludicrously desperate shout that pitched half a foot outside leg stump.

Obviously the introduction of neutral umpires has hit Australian cricket a lot more than English cricket but Australia need to move with the times and embrace DRS. Maybe hire Shane Watson to be a specialist DRS coach?

I think the criticism of Brearley was more to do with his batting. It was his roll as very respected and talented captain that kept him in the team.......This was of course back in the days before coaches with charts and stats told captains where to place fielders and who should bowl against each batsmen.

Paine was just the safe figure head of a choice for Cricket Australia, to cover up their disgraceful cheating......But we all know who is really their captain.
