The boys from the OS were at the match this afternoon, but I thought I'd post a short report here as the Under-18s moved to the top of the Youth Alliance South-East Conference with a narrow 1-0 win over Colchester United.

The Shrimpers' only goal of the game was scored by 17-year-old attacker Peggy Lokando, who was formerly with Arsenal's youth set-up. The Democratic Republic of Congo-born winger received the ball thirty yards from goal and drilled it into the bottom left-hand corner from just inside the penalty area two minutes before half-time, with goalkeeper Jack Smelt only able to touch the ball into the net.

Blues' Youths had enjoyed much the better of proceedings up to that point, with Smelt denying Charles Ademeno and parrying a James lindie effort around his near post. When the custodian was not on hand to claw away, defender Ryan Amass nodded Tom Hopkins' header off of the goal-line from a Lee Smyth corner, and both Luke Thurlbourne and Johnny Herd saw skimming efforts flash inches past either upright.

However, just after Southend had taken the lead, Jeremiah Olusanya smashed a 30-yard shot against the inside of Joe Welch's right-hand post, and after the break, Fabian Quintyn and Olusanya both saw low efforts shave the left-hand upright.

With the wind at the visitors' backs, Quintyn also tested Welch with a fierce shot, whilst substitute Jimmy Pirie was denied by Hopkins, who hacked his header off of the line after some deliberation. Sam Corcoran was also unfortunate to see a free-kick curled just over, and a dipping half-volley just clear the crossbar.

That is not to say that Blues did not have their chances, and Smyth's free-kick had to be touched over the crossbar by Smelt as it threatened the top left-hand corner, whilst Nathan Speed almost deflected Lindie's cross into his own net. Thurlbourne could have calmed the nerves in stoppage time, but he caressed a long-range shot with the outside of his right boot just past the left-hand post.

The result means that Southend top the table from Gillingham on goal difference, with the Gills travelling to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, whilst Ricky Duncan's men host Portsmouth. Queens Park Rangers remain a threat, just a point back with a game in hand. They play Northampton Town this weekend, and complete their season a week later as they make the trip to Brighton.

Team: Joe Welch; Dan Harvey, Ricky Byrne (Ronnie Jones 70 mins), Tom Hopkins, Johnny Herd; Peggy Lokando, Luke Thurlbourne, Richard Priest, Lee Smyth (Jamie Forshaw 85); James Lindie, Charles Ademeno (Davis Abbey 82). Sub not used: Rhys Henry.

Who was the pick of the players mate.

Tough one today - no-one really stood out. It was a really nervy end-of-season affair, you could tell that we are in with a chance of picking up the title as the players probably didn't express themselves as well as they would want to.

I think Lee Smyth played pretty well considering he knows that he's been released, but the two in the centre of the midfield needed to have a good game, Richard Priest and Luke Thurlbourne, especially once Colchester switched to three at the back just 12 minutes in due to an injury to their left-back. I'd probably single out Thurlbourne, who is a quite a determined character, and is not afraid to have a shot either.

The top of the South-East Conference table now looks like this:

1. Southend United U18s Pl21 W13 D4 L4 F45 A28 Pts43 GD+17
2. Gillingham U18s Pl21 W13 D4 L4 F48 A32 Pts43 GD+16
3. Queens Park Rangers U18s Pl20 W13 D3 L4 F47 A25 Pts42 GD+22
4. Wycombe Wanderers U18s Pl20 W10 D4 L6 F32 A21 Pts34 GD+11
5. Brighton & Hove Albion U18s Pl19 W8 D6 L5 F23 A17 Pts30 GD+6
6. Colchester United U18s Pl18 W7 D6 L5 F32 A25 Pts27 GD+7

The last game of the season is on Saturday, for any of you in the Southend area whose nerves can take two big games in one day, kick-off against Portsmouth is 11 o'clock (and I don't envy their early morning start one little bit!) at Boots & Laces. Everyone is welcome!

it's amazing to think that welch has been on our bench quite a bit this season and is still only 18... looks a lot older than that!

Lets all make the effort to get down to Boots and Laces on Saturday morning and support the youngsters - when was the last time that we were in with a shout at winning the youth league?.

Incidentally, has Lokando signed for the Blues and so will be playing for us next season?.

Between 1998/9 and 2004/5, the Youth Alliance season ended with Merit Divisions in the north and south. This meant Southend travelling to places like Swansea and Cheltenham. We regularly ended up in Division 3 (of 3) of these merit divisions, and usually finished 2nd or 3rd in them, as we seem to have a habit of finishing the season well.

Last year saw the South East Conference expanded to 12 teams, and we finished third over a complete season there, but as for actually winning anything, not for a long time.

As for Lokando, not sure. He's certainly been in on trial, and has played in at least three fixtures since the end of February.
