In the 1400's a law was set forth that a man was not allowed to beat
his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb. Hence we have 'the
rule of thumb '.

Many years ago in Scotland , a new game was invented. It was ruled
'Gentlemen Only...Ladies Forbidden'...and thus the word GOLF entered
into the English language .

The first couple to be shown in bed together on prime time TV was Fred
and Wilma Flintstone

Every day more money is printed for Monopoly than the US Treasury .

Men can read smaller print than women can; women can hear better.

Coca-Cola was originally green .

It is impossible to lick your elbow.

The average number of people airborne over the US any given hour:
61,000

Intelligent people have more zinc and copper in their hair (Ginger alert)

The first novel ever written on a typewriter: Tom Sawyer

Each king in a deck of playing cards represents a great king in history:
Spades - King David
Hearts - Charlemagne
Clubs -Alexander, the Great
Diamonds - Julius Caesar

If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in
the air, the person died in battle. If the horse has one front leg in
the air the person died as a result of wounds received in battle. If
the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural
causes.

Q. If you were to spell out numbers, how far would you have to go until
you would find the letter 'A'?
A. One thousand

Q. What do bullet-proof vests, fire escapes, windshield wipers, and
laser printers all have in common?
A. All invented by women.

Q. What is the only food that doesn't spoil?
A. Honey

In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes.
When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed
firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase......... 'goodnight, sleep tight.'

It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a
month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law
with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because
their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month,
which we know today as the honeymoon.

In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts... So in old
England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them
'Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down.' It's where we get the
phrase 'mind your P's and Q's'

Many years ago in England , pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the
rim, or handle, of their ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they
used the whistle to get some service. 'Wet your whistle' is the phrase
inspired by this practice.

Don't delete this just because it looks weird. Believe it or not, you
can read it..........

The golf one is actually an urban myth mate.....

The P's & Q's is rumoured to be during the days of printing presses where it was easy to mistake the two letters.

Sorry to blow a hole in your post :D

"Stewardesses" is the longest word typed with only
the left hand and "lollipop" with your right.

No word in the English language rhymes with month,
orange, silver, or purple.

"Dreamt" is the only English word that ends in the
letters "mt". (Are you doubting this?)

Our eyes are always the same size from birth, but
our nose and ears never stop growing.

The sentence: "The quick brown fox jumps over the
lazy dog" uses every letter of the alphabet. (Now, you KNOW you're going to try
this out for accuracy, right?)

The words 'racecar,' 'kayak' and 'level' are the
same whether they are read left to right or right to left (palindromes). (Yep, I
knew you were going to "do" this one.)

There are only four words in the English language
which end in "dous": tremendous, horrendous, stupendous, and hazardous.

There are two words in the English language that have
all five vowels in order: "abstemious" and "facetious."

TYPEWRITER is the longest word that can be made using
the letters only on one row of the keyboard. (All you typists are going to test
this out)

A cat has 32 muscles in each ear.

A goldfish has a memory span of three seconds.

A "jiffy" is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of a second.

A shark is the only fish that can blink with both eyes.

A snail can sleep for three years.

Almonds are a member of the peach family.

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain.

Babies are born without kneecaps They don't appear until
the child reaches 2 to 6 years of age.

February 1865 is the only month in recorded history not
to have a full moon.

In the last 4,000 years, no new animals have been
domesticated.

If the population of China walked past you, 8 abreast,
the line would never end because of the rate of reproduction.

Leonardo Da Vinci invented the scissors.

Peanuts are one of the ingredients of dynamite!

Rubber bands last longer when refrigerated.

The average person's left hand does 56% of the typing.

The cruise liner, QE2, moves only six inches for each
gallon of diesel that it burns.

The winter of 1932 was so cold that Niagara Falls froze
completely solid.

There are more chickens than people in the world.

Winston Churchill was born in a ladies' room during a dance.

Women blink nearly twice as much as men.

Now you know everything!

thought I'd add a few more.

*disclaimer - these aren't my own work so no flamings if any of you mortals spot a mistake!

If the population of China walked past you, 8 abreast,
the line would never end because of the rate of reproduction.

Aside from the strange connotations of '8 abreast', how would they find time to reproduce if they were walking past you?

Also, I believe the rule of thumb that kicks this whole lot off has been shown too be rubbish but never mind, they're fun to read in a way.

Yep, the modern view of Santa in red/white is purely derived from the marketing department of Coca-Cola inc!

Ah you see thats a myth on top of a myth . Yes the branded teh smiling fat gent in a Red suit , but a smiling indetical type of fella in a green suit (propably the Russian St Nic) was the insperation for it ;)

And teh card one , not true. The Card came we know is most likley derived from Tarot cards (turned into a game to hide it from inquestion , or they just liked playing games etc ) Tarot is supposed to be corruption of Thoth (Egyptian good of Writing , intellegence etc) and again created by those Rom/Gypsies (who accourding to legend are all from Egypt (E)Gypsies !)

I though they found borange reminded with Orange ? (wasnt it on a QI ??)
Goldfish (latest reseach ) have very good memories as good as primates in some case (they just get bored !)

Babies without kneecaps !!:hilarious: like it , they dont have complete skulls when the come out mind as teh soft top (crown) needs to gel and harden .

Mind you people have been found to have either half or up to 90% all of their brain matter missing yet have little or no metal disability !
