Gambas is Spanish for prawn / shrimp. A slight modification might have sufficed, although it turned out not to be so!

current job I really want to work for Opta Sportsdata, and produce all the footy stats in the current bun!.....

I got offered a part time job with Opta about 4 years ago but turned it down due to the potential excessive workload.

Saturday's would have meant nearly a 10 hour working day: watching the game you were collating for live and then spending 4-5 hours watching it back again tracking all the activity. This would have meant a possible 10.30-11pm finish and then treking across from the wrong side of London to get back home to Southend. This on top of a full time job in the City wasn't what I thought it was cracked up to be. Best time to look for Opta is during the summer as they look for new recruits around this time, so they can help to train you upto speed with reporting on the games.

Interview was pretty thorough on your football knowledge, including questions on what number does "so&so" wear who plays for a nondescript Dutch second division team!

Do you ever travel to the big ports here in Brasil Such as Santos, Vitoria ad Salvador

Shipping and export are huge here and I have some decent clients who are heavily involved.

No I've never been to South America, always wanted to go to Brazil. Oddly we have just picked a shed load of business from our partner in Brazil bringing loads of timber to the UK.

I know of a few of the pitfalls with Brazil, trying to get money out of them is bloody hard. Would be interested to compare notes on some customers.

Oh well that's my sales call for the day.

Job -European Commercial manager for a Liner shipping Company.

Pro's - Money is ok and get to to travel.

Cons - Its a tired industry, that needs a thorough revamp.

Ambition - Run a Basil fawlty style hotel.

Got to agree with you there Callan, you should try freight forwarding (or not), working on the Line side is probably better, but a bit less lucrative than forwarding.

Be interested to know who you work for, our paths may have crossed.

Before anyone asks no I'm not a stalker.:o

*WHAT YOU DO NOW: Sales and Marketing Manager for a niche business within the wholesale bank if Abbey National (effectively Banco Santander)

*PRO'S OF JOB - The money, the bonuses, the overseas trips (mainly because I organise the itinerary, allowing some ME time, no early morning meetings and cheap ciggies.

*CON'S OF JOB - Plenty, unlike my previous job where I could stroll in any time between 7.30am and 9 I have to be in by 7.45 or 8 at a push and rarely leave before 6.30, tonight was 8pm. Based in Euston so effectively I'm up at 5.45 and lucky if I'm home by 8. On the plus side my last place had a far east desk so I could get the occassional through the night call and I'd spend the train journey responding to a rammed full inbox on the Blackberry. Also the 3 months between jobs taught me that I haven't been putting the family second enough (naturally footie comes first :D ) and I've been trying to change that over the last few months which is difficult if I'm never around in the week.

*IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT I WOULD BE doing something involving driving, possibly a courier. When I'm not going to bed dreaming about Emma Bunton I'm often trying to work out where the missing niche in the market is. I've gone through all sorts over the last few weeks. I'm now debating how I could potentially make a going concern of either a model village, ice rink or holiday camp in Southend. :p

Current Job A variety of pointless tasks for a pointless company.

Pro's of Job Umm, the fact that it is only 5 minutes away is a pro.

Con's of Job Everything else, I get paid next to nothing, I don't like the people I work with, I work odd hours, my bosses have no clue what they're doing, and I could go on and on, but since I'm leaving for work soon, I don't want to think about how much I dislike that place.

If Money Was No Object I Would Be probably a sports journalist, I originally went to university as a Journalism major, but for some unknown reason I thought it was a good idea to switch to History!

Job: Postman for the great Royal Mail!

Pro's: Being done rather early ( finished hour and a half ago and im still getting paid whilst i sit here typing away ), Keeps me fairly fit, Brilliant in the summer, Good for perving at the 15/16 year olds (!!), Good atmosphere at work - great banter, normally directed towards me as im the lippy f**k!

Cons: Erm. Up at half 4 is about the only one and it means Friday night's cant be enjoyed as much as they possibly could. Not exactly a great career especially with the way the business is going ... ( down the pan )

Ambition/Money no object... Poker related!

Strange how the perception is different with regards to owning a bar on the Med when you don't actually live on the Med. I always thought it would be quite an interesting project to own a bar at some point after I emigrated to Spain. I even had a potential name: Gamberros. (I thought it was related to Shrimpers but I very quickly discovered that it actually means 'hooligan' in Spanish! I then thought of 'Nzamba's Bar'.) Now that I have been here 3½ years, I wouldn't touch a bar with a very large extendable barge pole. The hours are very, very long; the competition is hugely fierce; NO-ONE makes any money without investing a HUGE amount of capital; the estimated lifespan of a new bar on the Costa Blanca is currently 14 months. I can think of over a dozen people I know who have been financially ruined by such a venture and thus ended their dream of "sun and partaay all the time" ...

Gambero is Italian for prawn, not Spanish.

If you are going to live in a foreign country you really should make an effort to fit in.....

:)

XS, is right you know, on both counts.
However, it's fair to say most Spaniards use the imported English term hooligans, rather than the perfectly acceptable gamberros.
I remember, some years ago, walking down Avenida Pedrables (with RitchieC)on the way to MU's 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Barça(courtesy of Romario and Stoichkov).Somebody in front of us commented to his mate that there were some English hooligans behind them.I tapped the guy on the shoulder and explained(in Spanish) that we were football fans(aficionados)and not hooligans.:smiles:

*(For Uxbridge_Shrimper) Online Content manager for Poker at Ladbrokes eGaming. Working all day with poker, writing, t'net and Leilani. What more could I want?

Ah, the happy days when I could count Stokes as a colleague. Rather than just some Orient mug :winking:

In 5 years, Ive moved house 4 times, moved back to Southend (didnt like it), moved back to Kent. Got sacked a few times, travelled a lot for work, (China, US, Russia, India), had a daughter, married, and now freelancing and set up own company, working from home. On course to do very well this year...New client signed up yesterday! 3 clients now, and hopefully a few more to sign soon!

I've changed jobs, split up from a long term relationship, met Mrs MK, engaged, married and baby daughter in three years. Still no closer to my dream jobs though.
