Exactly. It is a load of toss, but Hallmark have successfully brainwashed the female populace and as a result, I will have to take the housemate out for a meal tomorrow evening.

*Ahem* Not all the female populace I think you'll find! Us bitter twisted ones still don't like it :p

(In all seriousness, I have nothing really truely against people doing stuff for it I just think the principle behind it is a bit naff)

I agree, the whole point of valentines day is romance and showing your special person you care, but by making it something you are expected to do and not out of choice its actually detrimental to the original meaning and has destroyed itself.

Bit like Christmas when the spirit of getting presents was ruined by all that Jesus stuff.

I will be buying a card for my wife as its compulsory, however I dont see how it means anything. Surely as already said a romantic gesture at any other time of the year without prompting would be far more heartfelt and welcome ? (I dont do it any other time of the year either to be honest, but if I did would be more heartfelt and welcome)

Is there a bah humbug saying applicable to Valentines Day ?

I agree with all the comments - boyf and I don't do Valentines day and never will. Don't see the point. We celebrate the day we first met which means much more to both of us.

As for the Valentines cards for fathers, mothers etc. It's not all that strange in Colchester so I've heard........;)

Thanks for this thread guys. It's made me realise I'm not alone in the 'I hate Valentines' club.

However as a result I now have such a warm fuzzy feeling of gratitude I want to send you all a Valentines and feel confused......

I don't 'hate' it, but I don't see alot of point in it. Could have something to do with me being single though...

Well I think it is a load of toss.

I got my other half a card that my sister-in-law made (ses makes cards as a hobby) and I'll buy her some flowers, it'll keep her quite anyway!

Valentine's Day is the worst day in the world to have a girlfriend, but it is the best day to be single. I'm going to an anti-Valentines party tomorrow night, and I've rarely felt so confident about not coming home alone!

The thing is, you could say the same thing for Mothers Day and Fathers Day.

Why wait till a specific day to show how much you love them etc.

The retail world just cashes in!

Bit early to be drinking isn't it JT?

it the only way to get through the day! just got the train to uni... every male is looking sharp, some have even brushed their teeth, a lot are carrying thorntons bags and C2C were giving out roses!! (the flowery kind)

shame its absolutely ****ing it down in the west end today

Blooming Valentine's Day (massacre!) :guns: :guns:

Love the idea of c2c handing out Valentine's day gifts.

Commuting daily on c2c must be the equivalent of being trapped in a loveless marriage.

Once a year they go through the motions of pretending to try and woo you and trying to demonstrate that they really do care. A single rose is a lame attempt to buy your affection, when the other 364 days they are going to treat you like s*** and generally ignore you. You smile through gritted teeth and pretend to be pleased, but you know that if you could sell the house and find somewhere else affordable to live that you'd do it in an instance....

Indeed, all of these start out as a nice idea but just turn into a reason for Clintons to make more money.

I went into Clintons last night (biggest card shop in the universe to cater for all 360 special 'days') and the queue was round the shop so thought sod it she can go without.

Ill take her out for dinner instead at the weekend. (As long as its not more than the cost of a card :) )

I tell you what I hate.....when men send flowers to their other halves at work....what sort of a real man does something like that. The only reason they do it is to boost their own ego cause they know all the other silly tarts in the office will go "ahh ain't that lovely, your'e so lucky to have a boyfriend like him, wish mine would do that". If my boyfriend sent me flowers at work I would ditch him as quickly as you like. They must be so insecure bless em....

Anyway, have fun whatever you get up to on this Valentines Day - to be honest more looking forward to the game on Saturday.

Very cynical..there are a lot of miserable blues fans out there.

God there must me much more important things to whine about than showing your other half some love..get into the spirit you bunch of whingers!!;)

No problem with showing the other half some love, just having to do it on one specific day because the card industry tells you to, it a big pile of bolleaux.
