I take exception to the inclusion of Bramble and Belgrave in this list.

It has taken many sessions of expensive counselling (ok, many sessions of expensive drinking if I'm honest) to try and forget many of the players mentioned in this thread and I don't want to name my own Worst XI and dredge all those bad memories up again.

All I will say is all the suffering we have had to endure in recent years will make success when it comes (hopefully at the end of this season) all the more sweeter.

Ok, here goes (anti-depressants at the ready)

Southall

        Beard        Morely         Whelan       Stuart

      Clark         Thurgood    Alderton        Houghton

                         Richards    Webb

Altho Alderton hardly played, he even looked crap in the reserves! A good enough reason to include him IMO.

We really have had some sh*te players, Although i hated Houghton i always thought everyone loved him (Fully expecting the Hartlepool away 4-2 comment from MtS

Absolutely. I pity Man U fans. How can they truly now what it's like to celebrate, when they've never really understood what it means to suffer?

That said, he was feckin unbelievably good that day...

IMHO, there have been worse left midfielders than him - Livett was the biggest waste of space ever, and invariably played on the left. Forbes could only dreamed of having Houghton's talent - seriously.

Scott Houghton was a damn talented player - any Spurs watchers of the early 90s could tell you that; and certainly any Shrimpers up at the Vic on that freezing day in December 1998 would testify likewise.

But he was also a idle fat knacker, so I wouldn't quibble too hard about his inclusion in the side... heck, I had him as my Worst XI left back (where he occasionally played, and was always rubbish, under the Chipmunk).

I also wonder: was Scott's game against Hartlepool the first instance of what has latterly become known as "the Halifax phenomenon" - i.e.:

*Tony Richards's performance against Halifax, 25th August 2001
*Gordon Connelly's half against Brighton, 2nd November 1999

Oddly, the first game in which I saw Richards play was that game against Halifax. He had a stormer that day - although, frankly, Halifax were one of the worst sides I've ever seen in a league game; and Richards could and should have scored at least two more.

You could be forgiven for coming away from that game and thinking, "he's not half bad, that Richards..." And what a sorry illusion that would have been.

Fortunately, I saw enough of Richards and Connelly in other games to know that those days were one-offs, and that instead they were mostly toilet and devoid of talent (cf. Neil Campbell).

Can't say I ever thought that about Houghton, though. An idle waster, yes. But not toilet or talentless.

Agree that he certainly had the talent, remember a few decent goals from him (Plymouth at home, and Barnet(?) away spring to mind), but never really thought he did it consistantly enough. Always looked overweight too, and i think he just never really impressed me.

Remembering the Halifax game, although Richards scored 2 i remeber he should have had at least 4, he fired wide twice in front of the North Bank with just the keeper to beat and i think he missed a few more. IIRC, even Webb scored that day! I bet nobody else can think of an occasion where their two worst strikers scored in the same game. God Halifax must have been bad

I really do struggle to think of a worse side I've ever seen at Roots Hall (*). They were an utter shambles - and even though the game was only in August, I vividly remember walking away after the game thinking, "Crumbs... that lot are going to struggle to stay up"

Sure enough, they finished 11 points and -25 goals adrift of the second bottom side (Bristol Rovers) that season.

Yep, he and Hodges in front of a packed away stand.  Top day that.  You see, remembering goals like that (and performances like he had against Hartlepool
tounge.gif
) makes it impossible for me to pick him as the Worst XI left midfielder.

Surely you can't have forgotten how unspeakably bad Simon Livett was.  Big, overweight, slow and talentless IIRC.  I struggle to think of a decent move he made, let alone a decent half or game.  He ranks in the top 5 least talented players ever to don the Blue shirt, for me...

worst team:

GK: Prudoe
DR: Beard
DC:Morley
DC:Coleman
DL:Stuart

MR: Connerley
MC:Thurgood
MC:Livett
ML: S Clark

FW: Campbell
fw:Roach

Hard choice for defenders, i never liked coleman for some reason especally at the end of his spell shouldnt of been captain either. I liked beard but he is the worst out of all our regular right bks. Up front weve had some rubbish but campbell and roach never looked like scoring. Richards was an ok target man would never be prolific but still better than them 2 awfull fowards. where are theyall now?
