That said, he was feckin unbelievably good that day...
IMHO, there have been worse left midfielders than him - Livett was the biggest waste of space ever, and invariably played on the left. Forbes could only dreamed of having Houghton's talent - seriously.
Scott Houghton was a damn talented player - any Spurs watchers of the early 90s could tell you that; and certainly any Shrimpers up at the Vic on that freezing day in December 1998 would testify likewise.
But he was also a idle fat knacker, so I wouldn't quibble too hard about his inclusion in the side... heck, I had him as my Worst XI left back (where he occasionally played, and was always rubbish, under the Chipmunk).
I also wonder: was Scott's game against Hartlepool the first instance of what has latterly become known as "the Halifax phenomenon" - i.e.:
*Tony Richards's performance against Halifax, 25th August 2001
*Gordon Connelly's half against Brighton, 2nd November 1999
Oddly, the first game in which I saw Richards play was that game against Halifax. He had a stormer that day - although, frankly, Halifax were one of the worst sides I've ever seen in a league game; and Richards could and should have scored at least two more.
You could be forgiven for coming away from that game and thinking, "he's not half bad, that Richards..." And what a sorry illusion that would have been.
Fortunately, I saw enough of Richards and Connelly in other games to know that those days were one-offs, and that instead they were mostly toilet and devoid of talent (cf. Neil Campbell).
Can't say I ever thought that about Houghton, though. An idle waster, yes. But not toilet or talentless.
