4th division

1. The good old days ..1976-77

Had a few beers and went up to the loft and brought down my Blues Progs from the 76-77 season. In the October prog v Newport.C is an article..its written.. Blues third in crowd pullers table As us older ones remember, when we were in the 4th division(real name),we normally were one of ,if not...

Breaking News 1980/81 Southend United 4th Division Championship Medal on eBay Today

Just seen that somebody has listed a 1980/81 4th Division Championship medal for sale on eBay today. Just thought that one or two collectors may be interested to know this. Bit out of my price range at £600 unfortunately.

The Squad of 1989-90

Three weeks ago, The Football League Paper featured our 4th Division promotion-winning squad of 1989-90 in their Where Are They Now? feature. The article was based on Bernie Friend's book Red Card Roy, with quotes from the book from Roy, and then the article went on to report where all the...
4. Question Going back in time

With the state of many clubs finances, do you think that taking a step backwards may help. By this i mean going back to the days of the old 3rd division South and North.By doing this it would generate more local derbies ,which mean higher attendances ,more revenue. Also less travel and no over...

Memory Lane On this day in history ... January 18th

We have a pretty lamentable record on this day through the years ... 2003 Rochdale (H) D3 .. 1-0 (Bramble) 1997 Sheffield United (A) D1 .. 0-3 1994 Luton Town (A) FAC3 .. 0-1 1992 Bristol City (A) D2 .. 2-2 (Angell Ansah) 1986 Crewe Alexandra (H) D3 .. 0-1 1980...
6. How bad is Div 2 football compared to ten years ago...

After watching yesterdays offering, I couldn't believe how bad the standard of football is at the moment. I'm not knocking our victory, but we hardly needed to turn up to get the win. I did overhear that Vale had numerous people out and that they were playing their kit man in defense, so that...
7. Let's keep him in!!!

Someone had to start this! When I first started watching Southend we were in the 4th division. We are still in the 4th division. We also have planning permission for a new stadium, with Sainsburys names as a 'partner'. Regardless of whether we actually build the stadium or not - we are no...

SZ's Southend United Hall of Fame - Dave Smith (2nd ballot)

Up for election to the SZ Southend United Hall of Fame is manager Dave Smith. Smith came incredibly close last time, missing out by just 0.26%. Will he fare better at his second attempt? Here's what I wrote last time: ---------------------------------------------------- This poll is really a...

Memory Lane SZ's Southend United Hall of Fame - Ian Benjamin

It's the answer to the most famous question in Southend United history: who put the ball in the Bury net? And as every Southend fan will gleefully tell you: Ian Benjamin, Ian Benjamin. Now this poll's been a long time coming*, but in some ways that's apt. *He received the required nominations...

BOGMISH Rd 1:2 - Stockport v Freddy's debut

Aptly enough on the day after relegation back to the fourth division, our second first round tie throws up two 4th division promotion seasons. The first one, was the 1986/87 season and ORM's nomination of Stockport away. Football was having a bad time with the Bradford Fire disaster and Hysel...

The 60k loan

<Introduction - Good News Anyone ? A colleague of mine is helping a friend collate some information on our club’s season and asked me for input - I had to look at his request 3 times before I could think of anything positive. Our football club’s chairman of course is always positive...
12. Let's ditch Fossets

Think it's about time we sort out the team and spend the money we've gained on better players to get us out of this mess. As people on here as already said, it's complete rollocks playing in the 4th division with a brand spanking new stadium up to the hilt in debt. Of course, Tilly has made...
13. On this day...

May 1st 1981 we drew 1-1 at home to Rochdale in front of crowd of 10,668 to clinch the 4th division championship to crown a fantastic season. The club's first piece of silverware (obviously many more have followed since) but a great achievement and an anniversary worth remembering IMO.

SZ's Southend United Hall of Fame - Dave Smith

This poll is really a week or so too early. The date of this poll should be 01 May, because that is the date for which Dave Smith will forever be associated with the club, for it was on 01 May 1981 that his side claimed the club's first major trophy* with a 1-1 draw against Rochdale. Dave...

Hillsborough 20 years on

I was 15 when this happened. By then I'd already been on a terrace and moved 20 feet across it without my feet touching the ground...just being moved around in the crush. Now that was just watching a 4th Division team, heaven knows what it would have been like at a big ground in something like...

Betting scandal

Little bit surprised that no-one has posted on this yet as the story broke this lunchtime. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_3/7987807.stm IMHO this is a huge story, if it was premier$hite it would be all we would hear about for the next couple of years. Please don't tell me the...

SZ's Southend United Hall of Fame - Alan Moody

Next up for nomination is Alan Moody. The last two nominees, David Crown and Ricky Otto look unlikely to make it into the Hall of Fame (at least on the first ballot), probably because their glittering Southend career's were deemed too short. That is unlikely to keep Alan Moody out. In fact it...

SZ's Southend United Hall of Fame - David Webb

For 84 years Southend was a team that bounced around the lower divisions. The opening words of the official club history are: "Other teams dreamt of Wembley, some hankered for the first division championship or a place in Europe - but Southend only ever wanted second division status." We'd...

Standing at the cross-roads - read this Ron Martin!

I think the club is currently at a cross roads. We can either spend money and try and buy our way out of possible trouble with expensive short term solutions, or we can struggle on with what we've got, topped up by loan signings and the occasional more expensive signing when the right player...

Southend Match Day Magazines

I have a rather huge collection of home match day magazines that goes back to the season we won the old 4th Division. The collection isn't complete by any means, and there are also a load of away ones from the early 90s when we were in the old 2nd Division. At the moment they're all in my loft...
