When I first lost my job at the start of December, I thought a couple of weeks off might be very nice, relax a bit over xmas, think about where I am and where I want to go, things like that.

Begining my ninth week of sitting at home, it is starting to wear a bit thin. I seem to have developed an unhealthy obsession with Crisps, Chocky Biscuits, Porn, and NCIS. Not to mention being logged into Shrimperzone for approximately 38 hours per day.

In the nine weeks I have managed to get four job interviews through agencies, and not managed to get any of the posts, which is dissappointing to say the least. Especially as the reasons given were that I was too experienced, could not drive, did not have an enhanced CRB, and did not have knowledge of a specific piece of software. Oh well. Morons.

Spending days listening to a grumpy Landlord, not being able to go to the pub, ringing recruitment agencies, filling in job application forms, dealing with Housing Benefits, is definitely not the way to keep sane.

I honestly belive I am slowly going mental, and not in a good way. :)

To cap off my grumpyness, our lovely little football team seems to have gone s*** again. *sigh*

Sure everything will be alright in the end!

Are the rest of the Shrimperzone pub dwellers as grumpy as me in this cold, credit crunched, recession fuelled, and misery riddled January, or are there some positive tales to tell?

As my good friends tell me, it could be worse. :D

Shouldn't have lost your job

I had about six weeks out of work in summer last year. It was marvellous - just spent it going to the Oval to watch England. I can imagine that winter unemployment must be absolutely terrible, though, and I hope you find something soon Moridin (and closet O, Kris).

Think yourself lucky. I was made redundant from my job of 3 and a half years in April along with the whole of my office and have since had temporary contracts here and there, but nothing really substantial since October.

I have desperately tried to get a permanent role since but there's very little out there. Just weeks temping here and there. I was "too good" for one role and they thought I'd jump ship not long after, and despite reassurances on more than one occasion from myself and the recruitment company they appointed someone who knew someone within the firm. I actually got a job with Hyundai cars in Tilbury, only for the car industry to take a dive the very next week which meant I was given a job I could not start. I was basically made redundant before I'd done a days work. I'm still waiting patiently for the world to stop being a bitch and for the call telling me I can start. Last week I had my first permanent job interview for sometime. It all went very well and I was 1 of just 6 to actually get an interview (unlike the 30 that I have been up against recently) from the tens and tens that had applied. I was pretty hopeful that my situation had finally been sorted and was told I'd find out on Tues the 27th. After a day of nervous waiting and one million checks of my mobile, I received an e-mail at 17:45 telling me they really liked me but at the last minute they got someone who had done a similar role for a rival of theirs. Fan-f*cking-tastic.

I'm lucky in the fact that I'm young and live at home and am not one of these people that blow their wage packet before they get it, hence I don't have to take any old job, but I'm still becoming increasingly frustrated at life.

Not wanting to be disrespectful, but do you attend these interviews fully "gothed" up?

Cheers for that Johnny. There seems to be a few perm jobs around at the moment, it's the waiting and endless form filling!

Not disrespectful at all Stevo, but do I go in Suit and Tie!

First impressions tend to stick, so I always try and look as professional as possible, I very rarely mix work and my social interests.

It has always seen to be stupid little excuses, I would much rather they say I was crap :D.

Just adds to the frustration, as does the fact a lot of people seem to be in the same boat, so everything has become that more competitive.

.

That is really harsh, on both occasions. Certainly feel for you and good luck with the search!

I had a similar thing, where I was appointed at Leicester City Council on a 6th month contract, only to be told the week before that the had decided to remove funding for the project. Hard times.

Seems there is a lot of us on this particular boat at the moment.

If you were crap its doubtful you would get an interview.
I think you will always find, the person doing the interviewing will take a shine to one candidate more than others and that person usually gets the job, especially if there is nothing to chose between the two.
Personally I always go for the white English person! Its a joke lefties I was kidding!!!!

Our economists are working on the assumption that there'll be no significant recovery for 18 months at least, so there'll be plenty more joining you mate

Things seem a bit grim for you chaps up there but thank god things down this neck of the woods seem pretty rosy.

The only thing I would say, especially to those with a good talented set of friends/colleagues and a few quid behind them, it is the ideal opportunity to perhaps get something new going. The UK is great for many things including people with new business skills so perhaps it is time to take the chance to make something of yourselves and more importantly, not have to answer to some **** with half your skills and talent.

I've been 'between jobs' since the end of October. Quite frankly I'm quite happy as it is at the moment.

It's given me time to edit a football programme for Basildon United. As a result of that, another club have asked me to help out with theirs and also their website. On top of that a radio station want to start reading the stuff I write out regularly on their morning show.

The time off has given me plenty of opportunity to do what I do best - writing - as opposed to having to do something I don't care about or enjoy for a few shekels. It's got me noticed and is also leading to me studying for a qualification so I can make a decent career out of it.

Of course, money is very tight, but I get by. After paying into it for 25 years or so it's probably about time I got something out of the welfare state for a while. And when I do sign off I'll be heading in a new direction.

Apart from that, I'm also arranging something to do for Havens and St. Lukes Hospice, so the time away from work is being productively filled almost throughout. I still make time for Countdown though.

I know it can be very tough on people, not just financially, but also emotionally, when unemployment hits you, but quite often it leads to a better opportunity. If you stick at it that better opportunity will come.
