Whatever you thought of Paynter today it is hard to see how his Southend playing days are not already over. Sections of the crowd booing his name and large cheers when subed. I feel we have a Neil Campbell on our hands. Had his header gone in off the bar, or his goal counted then he could of held his head high, but I'm afraid his days, and our 200 grand, are gone in my opinion.

I agree its going to be hard for Paynter to succeed. Sections of the crowd seem to have already decided that they don't like him. However the boo-boys don't always get their way and hopefully our captain can give him a few words of encouragement as he has been there himself.

HIS 22. Plus he was the only man to almost score for us. Why blame Paynter when everyone can just as easy blame any other player today accept hunt and maher.
Paynter might accually be a good player if everyone stops getting blinded by his transfer fee.
Paynter 3rd best player today.

It's not your Mrs fault, It's all Paynter's fault.

Its Paynter's fault we were completely overrun in midfield

It's Paynter's fault we conceded sloppy, sh!tty goals

It's Paynter's fault Cardiff kept the ball so well and at times we just couldn't get it off them

Its Paynter's fault i missed the first 10 minutes of the game because of heavy traffic

And well done those in the West who chanted 'f%&k off paynter' when he went off - Superb stuff, bound to boost his confidence

thats right his days are over just like southends why supporters go to games to abuse players i never know.
it was on sky and i wish some supporters stayed at home to watch it so the true fans could really get behind the team

Paynter isn't a scape goat as quite frankly very, very few can hold their hands up today and say they did alright, but he was cack. If that header would've gone in things might have been different and he might have kicked on but at the moment it's hard to see just quite what he gives us.

He just doesn't seem to fit into the team. It might not be his fault, but he just hasn't clicked as yet and it's all very well him throwing a paddy at Freddy for not passing in the 2nd half but after the amount of times he stood back and watched him and never tried to help him out, Freddy's got every right to expect him not to be there! I'd give Hooper a start and fast. He had more attempts in his 30 minutes than Paynter did in his 80.

I agree with Shrimpboy in the fact that Clarke isn't covering himself in glory either. Although Barrett was pretty woeful today as well. Helpful hint Adam, don't put your arms round the attacked everytime you jump for a ball, t will cost us.

Flahavan: 6
Francis: 5
Clarke: 5
Barrett: 5
Hammell: 6
Campbell-Ryce: 5.5
Maher: 6
Hunt: 6.5
Gower: 5
Paynter: 5
Eastwood: 6.5

Hooper: 6.5
Ricketts: 6
Guttridge: 6

I hope people are not misreading my observations as things I agree with.

I did not boo him and although I would pick Harrold (if fit) every time over Billy, based on the games played so far, I will back the team whomever plays.

There was one "fan" behind him who shouts at Paynter the whole game. I think that energy could be better spent...erm maybe chanting!

I take my hat off to Cardiff fans I swear at one point they were singing

"It's just like watching the bill"

How was freddy our best player? Paynter was by far in my eyes better then Eastwood today. His effort and his header proves this.
Nice match report though. i agree with alot you say. But by now way was freddy our best player.

Freddy was the only one who looked like threatening them. Paynter lumbered about and his lazy swipe at that volley that sent the ball towards the corner flag summed it up. At least Freddy looked dangerous, which was tough for him as the trebled up on him all the time like they did with JCR.

I don't think they did treble up on him though. He had a lot of space when he was recieving the ball - space he normally thrives on - but he dallied on the ball far too much for my liking and it was then that the Cardiff players started to surround him.

Paynter wasn't looking like scoring when he hit the bar or when he was just offside and scored?
i appreciate your views i just reallly don't agree with them.

There was the effort off the bar but other then that whenever the ball went near him you never thought anything was going to happen.

Couldn't make it to the game today and watched on sky.

To be honest we looked good for a majority of the 1st half but as usuall this season gave away a couple of of sloppy set piece goals. I foe one would be interested to know how many we have conceeded from set plays and those from open play
rock.gif

Its also clear that Paynter and Eastwood will not work, why no Harrold on the bench?

Looking through the threads i think Paynter is receiving some unfair stick. He rarely gave the ball away which Freddie did quiet often. I don't think we reallly know what type of player he is yet but i think his link up play was good but obviously his shooting was poor.

It was good to see JCR get in some crosses but again we had no-one attacking the 6 yard box, Harrold and Ricketts would be ideal for this.

Clarke was poor, again i would add, can't see all the fuss about him at the moment but i don't see him getting booed. His distribution is appalling and does tend to stand off. I think Sodje needs to replace him!

2nd half was shocking and was not helped really by our bench, no real variety for a change of game plan if needed, we seem to have a bench of like for like players, we miss cole for that i feel.

Finally i though the ref was poor, Cardiff seem to fall over very easy and get fouls for it.

Overall we must remember we will have days like this, we are in a very difficult league in which we have to be at our best to compete. If we don't we will lose. There is no point on getting on everyones back. The side is still evolving and in case you forget young !! we are not going to win the bloody thing or even get close but we can and are laying the foundations for next year and the year after. Fans that are over critical now obviously can't see the bigger picture and are after instant success, its not and won't happen, lets accept it for now and watch the team grow throughout the season and remember taht this time 2 years ago most of these players were 14th in league 2.

Come on you shrimpers.........

The first rule of football is, you play as one unit in one third of the pitch. Barrett and clarke were playing soooo deep we were consantly made to play in three quarters of it.. Cardiff couldn't believe the amount of room they had and didn't have to win the ball but wait for a blue shirt to give it to them.

Wait a second, Harold wasnt even on the bench??? LOL

Tilly must have made that mistake i sometimes make on fm, press goto match then realise you forgot to add one of your key players!

It was poor all round today as a lot of people on here have already said. But it IS time to take a reality check. I would have bitten my right arm off to be in this division a couple of years ago. It really is a dream to be playing back in this league, and something I never thought would happen again to be honest. But games like today will come about every now and again. I said before the game it was about time somebody in this league really got stuck into us and outplayed us, and that happened today. Sadly, it happened infront of the TV cameras.
So tonight, we sit in 21st place. A league placing that if we achieved on the last day of the season we would celebrate down the spread just like 6th May.
So maybe it's time to forget all the glory hunters and appreciate what we have here. And get behind the team. And that does not mean booing people off the pitch. Granted, I thought he was utter sh!te today, but to hear people giving him that kind of reaction just reminded me of the bad old days. And we're not anywhere near that.
I'm not having a go at anyone in particular, I just want to see people get behind the team when they need us.
I don't know who it was that said Cardiff were rubbish...but sorry pal, you're wrong. I thought they were great. A team in form, and one that we're not likely to see the like of much this year.
Now lets get behind whoever is playing and pick up 3 points at Derby.
