Fans that are over critical now obviously can't see the bigger picture and are after instant success, its not and won't happen, lets accept it for now and watch the team grow throughout the season and remember taht this time 2 years ago most of these players were 14th in league 2.

Round of applause!

I think a few of our fans need a reality check!

Quote[/b] (keefmoon @ Sep. 24 2006,19:46)]It was poor all round today as a lot of people on here have already said. But it IS time to take a reality check. I would have bitten my right arm off to be in this division a couple of years ago. It really is a dream to be playing back in this league, and something I never thought would happen again to be honest. But games like today will come about every now and again. I said before the game it was about time somebody in this league really got stuck into us and outplayed us, and that happened today. Sadly, it happened infront of the TV cameras.
So tonight, we sit in 21st place. A league placing that if we achieved on the last day of the season we would celebrate down the spread just like 6th May.
So maybe it's time to forget all the glory hunters and appreciate what we have here. And get behind the team. And that does not mean booing people off the pitch. Granted, I thought he was utter sh!te today, but to hear people giving him that kind of reaction just reminded me of the bad old days. And we're not anywhere near that.
I'm not having a go at anyone in particular, I just want to see people get behind the team when they need us.
I don't know who it was that said Cardiff were rubbish...but sorry pal, you're wrong. I thought they were great. A team in form, and one that we're not likely to see the like of much this year.
Now lets get behind whoever is playing and pick up 3 points at Derby.
Well said mate, precisely my own thoughts.
Think back to the early months of the 2003/04 season when we were at the bottom of Division 2 and contemplating playing the likes of Forest Green and Morecambe and be thankful that we're getting the opportunity to play the likes of the Championship's top club.
Let's put todays result behind us and give our full support to ALL the players when they come on the pitch at Pride Park next saturday, I will.

Nice to see a good point well made

Only been to the 1 game this season?

3 soft goals, not helped by us playing badly

Paynter seems to be getting a lot of stick, on hear, at Roots Hall, and on away days but I honestly can't see why. Paynter was one of very few positvies for us today. Thought he looked sharp, strong and had a decent touch. Won his fair share in the air, had a goal disallowed for offise and hit the cross bar.

He isn't going to be the 20 goal a season striker, we have that in Eastwood, but Paynter is a good foil for him. He does Eastwood's donkey work, takes the kicks and elbows and puts himself about which allows space for Eastwood.

I have been impressed with him so far. He works extremely hard for the cause and wants to impress with us. Something else we have to take into account is his played a lot of football up north for Port Vale and Hull, so also well as settling into a new team with a different style of play to his previous clubs, he is also having to up root from familiar surroundings and settle in down south.

Give the guy a break, just because we have "apparently" spent £200k on him, your all expecting the next Freddy Eastwood. If we had picked him up on a free he wouldn't be getting half the stick he gets now.

Finally, his a massive step up from some of our past heros Rawle, Bramble, Belgrave, Jones, Richards et all. So stop f%&king Discussing and get behind him, and the rest of the team for that matter!!!

What not even about his header which hit the bar or the one which was disallowed?

tw&t.
Classy!

Someone has an opinion different from mine so I'll call him a name, as I am unable to put across my own point.

On the harrold subject, spoke to spinner and apparently he picked up a calf injury in training on friday.

Also think actually paynter had one of his best games in a blue shirt.

why does clarke wait for the ball to bounce before doing something with it? really frustrating

midfield let us down though today, the pressure our defence was under was rediculous and its the midfields fault for letting them walk into our half and put through balls behind our defence time after time

ratings:

flavs 5 - 1 quality save, but let in 3 goals, 2 of which were scrappy in the 6 yard box. also his distribution was very poor today

francis 6.5 MOTM- a better defensive performance today, but was given little opportunity to push forward which is his biggest strength (great crosses though when he did get forward)

hammell 5.5 - poor set pieces today, had his work cut out and defended well but passing was sloppy

barrett 6 - solid enough but needs to do more when winning free headers to make sure the ball reaches a blue shirt

clarke 4.5 - very very poor. great block to deny a shot, but otherwise dallied on the ball, let it bounce infront of him and generally looked a shadow of his usual feisty self

maher 5.5 - calm and collected at times but invisible at others. cardiff had too much skill he couldnt get a sniff. lack of pace showed as they literally ran through the middle of him

hunt 6 - best player in our midfield, makes up for his lack of passing ability by winning the ball well and picking the easy sensible option. pushed forward at times (makes me think of our own John O'Shea)

gower 5.5 - poor but still looked our most threatening player, had a great shot across the goal. should have swapped sides with JCR to let him have a run at the slow RB

JCR 6 - felt sorry for him cos he had really met his match. their number 3 was quality and so quick, jcr just couldnt get past him. wanted him to swap sides with gower but it didnt happen

freddy 6 - frustrating, had a few sighters but nothing that really scared the cardiff backline

paynter 6 - nearly scored and was almost onside for his disallowed goal (the replay shows it was tight), worked hard and put pressure on them but he is a centre forward, not a striker

subs:
hooper 5.5 - had a couple of shots saved but then sky'd an easier chance right over the south stand. often the game goes past him but has good potential

ricketts 6.5 - i thought he played really well, got a great brain and opened up the defence a couple of times. cant wait to see more of him with freddy cos he wins the ball well and is hard to disposses

gutts 6.5 - also looked good when he came on, but still not quite his usual self. unlocked their defence once which was more than had happened for the previous 80mins. still a dilemma over whether he should start

referee 5 - pedantic yes, but watching through on sky its amazign how a different angle can make you realise that things can look so different. worrying thing was the amount of times he gave them a freekick (then we would abuse him), leading him to quickly blow up for a freekick to us for seemingly nothing. i want consistancy, not refs trying to even things out!

Hmmm, missed this comment the first time round. I have to say that (for obvious reasons) I have watched a lot of Chammpionship football on TV during the opening weeks of the season and I thought Cardiff City were a well-disciplined unit today and overall one of the best teams I have seen play this season. They tore a sleepy Southend apart down the right-hand side during the first-half and spent much of the second period dominating midfield with as little effort as possible; the job was done in the opening 45 minutes; no point in over-exertion when the opposition simply has no answer. But I'm not going to get too despondent over the result though; if we played like that against someone like Stoke City or even Leeds United then I would be concerned. But - reality check - we played against a side sitting three points ahead at the TOP of the table on merit, not because they are "rubbish" ...

Perhaps 'rubbish' is an exaggeration.

I genuinely didnt rate Cardiff though. If a good/great team had come to Roots Hall and stuffed us I'd have had no complaint, but it was more a case of us losing the game than them winning it. Too many wayward passes, miscommunication between team members (especially for the first goal), and some very poor officiating.

The early goal did for us, and it was a soft one to concede.

Like you said it was a bad day at the office

Thought I would add my views on the game as they seem to differ from some on here.

I watched the game on Sky and was really disappointed with the commentary. I know we lost 3-0 but you could be forgiven for thinking Cardiff were the only team playing. The comment that "any postives Tilson can take from the game? That Southend only have to play Cardiff once more this season" was particularly annoying.

My second gripe was the referee. I usually try to be fairly forgiving with referees and understand that there are going to be a few wrong decisions throughout a game. I thought this ref didn't have a clue. The aura of immunity that seemed to have been gifted to the Cardiff defence (especially Purse) was unbelievable with a free-kick given every time one of our players went anywhere near them. Meanwhile at the other end, Thompson seemed to be allowed to get away with far more (as the Sky commentator said "I've lost count of the number of times Thompson has 'rag-dolled' the Southend defenders"). Having said that I think the off-side decisions (for our disallowed goal and for the pass in the lead up to their third) were probably correct - although it was very tight.

Regarding the game, I didn't think we played terribly, and was very encouraged by the first ten minutes. Then came the free-kick (another dodgy decision in my eyes as I can't see how Francis could have deliberately handballed it when he couldn't see the ball). I guess this is the difference between teams that are at the top of the league and those at the bottom. It was a good delivery but Purse missed the ball with his foot and was fortunate to see it go in off his knee.

I thought after this we struggled and we were overrun in midfield with Hunt and Maher struggling to impose themselves on the game. JCR didn't really get much chance to shine as he was heavily marked and he kept getting muscled (not always fairly) off the ball. As other have said, perhaps he'd have had more success on the left.

It seems that opinion on Paynter is quite split and after several critical threads over the last few weeks I wasn't sure what to expect. In fact I thought he looked pretty sharp and he created our two best chances; the glancing header off the crossbar and the offside goal. I really struggle to see how he attracts so much criticism, but I guess people just see it differently. I am however disgusted that anyone should boo a player, and as others have said those people should really take a look at themselves and question whether they have the club's best interests at heart.

I can see why some have said that Cardiff didn't look that great. I think the first goal was pretty fortunate and before then they hadn't looked that great. After this they started to improve and their midfield really dominated. The second goal really killed us off and although there was some skill from Chopra, it was a really scrappy goal to concede. I was very disappointed to see that some of our players looked quite dejected coming on for the second half. I think Cardiff will do well and are a very well organised team, but we really gifted it to them today. None of the goals were particularly well worked or cleverly crafted IMHO.

I thought Francis and Hammell both did well at the back. I didn't think Barrett did too much wrong either although he and Clarke did sit a bit deep. Gower started well but faded towards the end of the first half and as I said before I think JCR was nullified by the opposition. I don't think Hunt and Maher is the answer to our midfield problem as they are both too similar and really didn't create much or push forward enough.

That was my view of the game anyway. I was disappointed with the result but I don't think we should take it too much to heart. Tilly will know how to get the players focused again and I'm sure the defeat will be forgotten again by next Saturday.

southendsleeper - you may well have been a season ticket holder for years, doesn't mean to say you know much about football... I wasn't at the game but watched on the box and as others have said, Paynter was actually alright - he had two good opportunities cross bar with one and a disallowed goal with the other... So before you post on here giving it the big one, we are all southend supporters, get behind all of them, especially those who haven't had much time to prove themself...Tilly has got us this far...

Well there's your problem for a start

Dont tell me not to come on here and give it the big one, I'm sure you've contributed a lot in your 43 posts.

It was a match report written shortly after the game, if you want objective reporting read an FBM report.

I was fed up at the time, and wrote what I felt at the time. Reflecting on what I wrote, I was probably wrong about some things, but if we all felt the same it would be a very boring messageboard.

I'll still be behind the team, and I havent called for any player changes, I just wrote it as I saw it

well for those small amount of posts I have brought some pretty big stories to this site so I would find out a bit about me before judging my posts. I'm not one to post mindless dribble about slagging players off...or retract things I have said because probably I realised that I don't really know what I'm talking about...

You know nothing mate.

I'm not sure that anyone has done this, but I'd like to thank Southend Sleeper for actually going to the trouble of writing a match report.

I was forced to watch it on the telly in Newcastle with the in-laws gathered round making helpful comments like, "Way aye, they doon't pass it well, do they?"

Anyway, it was a good post and, even if I disagree with the Paynter points and I think you wrote it when you were in a particularly bad mood, well done for whacking it up there for us!

First off I'm not your mate

Secondly, it becomes clearer why you dont get updates to the front page when this the response to anything that doesnt paint a rose tinted version of the club.

Thirdly, who are you to tell me what to do, really?

This is the first negative report of done of Southend, and even then it wasnt that bad. So check my posts before posting your drivel about me.

If you'd posted anything of interest I'm sure I'd have remembered you

I think Sodje should start over clark and I think Hunt played well. What we need is a central midfielder willing to get forward. I can't understand why Jay Smith isn't even mentioned!

I saw mitchell cole in the ground today and thought he must be thinking "How am I not in the squad!"

Took the Mrs today who only ever sees us lose, I'll take full responsibility for the result!
