I always get asked around this period what it is like for a footballer over Christmas, having to train on Christmas Day and not being able to partake in the usual alcohol fuelled festivities.

Well I can’t talk for everyone but I love it, on and off the pitch.

Not only do the fixtures come thick and fast, but the period is a great shaper for the rest of the season. We know that a good run of form throughout the end of December is vital to our season plan, especially after our little blip of late. If we come out of the festive period in and around the play-offs we’ll know we are on track for where we want to be come May time.

As a kid growing up, I used to love the Christmas period because it meant there were lots of matches on, and now I’m on the other side of things I can appreciate how much this means to people. Everyone who comes to the matches is always in the best of spirits which is nice, and takes a bit of pressure off us playing.

Whilst I don’t want to talk about Saturday’s game too much, it was very disappointing to come away from it without a point. I thought we played really well first half, the best we’ve played for a while, showing some exciting and clinical football along the way.

Indeed when we came in the gaffer said it was really good to see, and he wanted to see more of it in the second half, which unfortunately we were unable to do. We started well enough; with a great move down the right, expert cross by Franno and tidy finish by Walks (James Walker), but then it all went wrong.

Sometimes goals can come from nothing, and whilst someone belting in a screamer from thirty yards is never nice, you hold your hands up and accept it, but when they score two goals from set pieces, you have every right to be disappointed in how you’ve conceded. We’ve conceded far too many than we’ve scored from set plays and no doubt we’ll be working religiously to rectify this over the foreseeable future.

Personally speaking I struggled on Saturday, so much so that I didn’t make the trip last night to Cheltenham, although I hope to be fully fit for Saturday. From my own diagnosis I think I have bronchitis, and it came on last Thursday in training. I felt fine in the first half, but I just felt drained in the second and whilst I contributed enough, it was no where near the performance a fully fit Revell could produce.

Off the field, the three loanees went back to their respective Clubs this week, and I thought all of them did a superb job in their time here.

Lee ‘ASBO’ Sawyer deserves a special mention for perfecting the scruffiest footballer in the world look. He’d turn up in jeans and hoodie as if he’s just robbed the local Co-op (and I still dispute that balaclava he turned up in once wasn’t worn for fashion purposes!).

I also remember him turning up in a Prada tracksuit once, which I swear was actually a Brada tracksuit purchased from Magaluv’s finest retail outlets, which gave off more of a shine than Barretts forehead! This was accompanied by a fine pair of flip flops despite it being -5 degrees outside!

The only man who could rival ASBO’s dress sense has to be A-Fed (Federici). I don’t know if Adam has kids or not but every day he’d turn up in a t-shirt which looked like children had crayoned all over them, absolutely shocking.

In all seriousness though, we were all a little bit surprised that we had him on loan as he’s a very classy keeper at this level and added that something extra to our starting eleven. However, so does Mildy (Steve Mildenhall) and I have no doubt he’ll be able to fill the gap left by Adam, although his choice of pastel coloured t-shirts are incomparable to Feds!

HRK (Hal Robson-Kanu) I feel got involved a lot more during his time with us this time, and was far more settled than when he was with us last year. He kept to himself but could always contribute to the banter when required.

I’d like to finish off this week with a special mention for Dean Austin, who’s moved on to pastures new with Watford.

Dean was a great coach, and always gave us great sessions which were very intense. Mentally as well he was superb; he never let you finish on a bad session and really knew how to motivate people.

Whilst we’re not delighted he is leaving, it’s a tribute to his good work that he’s moving to an advanced role at Watford and we all wish him the best of luck there.

Here it is, for those have been waiting for it:

Thai Green Curry, ‘we need a twelve man out there’ style – Revs tip: add a few king prawns to the dish, you won’t be disappointed!

Take care and, as ever, up the Blues!

Something which very rarely happens to me happened last Sunday. When me and the missus sat around the tele for the draw, and as our name was pulled out to play Chelsea I was left totally speechless! Only for a second mind before my phone started ringing off the hook!

What a draw, I bet even Kevin ‘Oracle’ Betsy couldn’t have predicted that!

It really is a dream draw for everyone connected to the Club and is a just reward for all the hard effort we’ve put in to the competition so far.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have taken part in a similar scenario in my first year at Brighton, where we were drawn away at West Ham and as a lad who only a few months earlier was used to playing teams like Chelmsford City (no offence to anyone connected to them) to turn out against a Premiership side was a dream come true.

But nothing will compare to the Bridge and whilst I can’t wait to pit my wits against John Terry, I’m sure he can’t wait to find out what my dish of the week is!

Referring to Saturday’s game I thought it had the potential to be very difficult but I thought we handled it very professionally, resulting in a solid performance. We played some decent football in a tie which could easily have swung the way of the underdogs if we didn’t concentrate for 90 minutes, with a semi-decent debut from young Junior Stanislas! Talking of which I hope you all noticed his Revel-like technique for the free-kick, and that was only after one day of training with me!

The two new boys have settled well so far (Junior and Robert Milson) and it goes to show how far the Club has come when you can attract youngsters from Premiership clubs down to Roots Hall.

I notice captain Barrett’s opened his mouth again and abused timid left-back Dan Harding in his blog last week. Saying that, although Dan may look fifteen years old, he has teanwolf tendencies (Dan has the same ears as him!) so Barrett wants to tread carefully!

However, what ‘el capitan’ failed to mention is that Dan’s daughter has more muscley calves than himself, and she could probably out sprint him!

For those of you who are wondering, yes Kevin Betsy is still alive, but since the lads have been ribbing him about his ‘oracle’ claim he’s been a bit quiet. Maybe he has seen that his book ‘Beauty and the Betsy’ is going to bomb when it is released next summer, and it may be the reason why he’s been taking a coaching course this week. Saying that I’m told it was his Junior Team Managers award as apposed to his EUFA A Licence!

For the budding chefs out there, it’s a real culinary delight for you this week:

‘Aubergine and Lamb Moussaka (nothing to do with cooking Franck!), with a green salad’

As ever, take care and I’ll see you all soon.

Up the Blues!

This is a classic:-

But nothing will compare to the Bridge and whilst I can’t wait to pit my wits against John Terry, I’m sure he can’t wait to find out what my dish of the week is!

Would be a bit unfair if he didn't get picked seeing as he helped them get into the 3rd round.

Possibly. I like Revell and I admire his confidence. I'm just suggesting that it won't count for anything if Barnard and Freedman are back from injury and firing on all cylinders. A lot of things can and no doubt will change in four weeks.

woah woah WOAH! let's just calm down Hanky! you're in danger of getting everyones hopes up that Barney and Dougie are going to be fit by them

Fair comment.
