What's the big issue? The guy isn't well, and any chef worth his salt can knock up a plain meal like that in no time at all, so it won't put him out much either.

(I had a colleague with crohn's disease. In the end he had to have a colostomy plumbed in. Shame, he really was a nice guy. This really isn't a nice thing to have.)

Have you spoke to the restaurant, the chances are they are used to things like this, in fact I can almost guarantee it

they will be able to accommodate him, don't make such a big fuss
 
if the blokes not well, just don't get streesed over it, but plan your choice of menu for his wake.
