The 2010 side looks stronger defensively but the fact remains that the 2009 side could score goals......well Barnard could score goals anyway. This year's side is potentially a stronger unit but the fact we look powder puff offensively is a worry. Sturrock seems to have got things right at one end, if he can do the same with the other we can really go for promotion this season.

I'd have to give the 2010 side the edge......

This is actually an interesting point. Barnard scored a ridiculous percentage of our goals, (helped by taking the penalties, such as IIRC the first one of his hat-trick), but as a team we weren't that prolific at all.

It will be interesting to see in December what team scored more goals: 2009 SUFC, with Barney scoring plenty but no-one, or 2010 with the goals shared far more around. I think I'll go for the team without the 20 goal a season man.

And I would like to revisit this thread in six months, and compare the February 2010 team, with the February 2011 team. All Sturrock needs to do is either find another Freddy in a non-league team, or another Barnard in a Premiership team's reserves.

Easy, this management lark...

Prior to kick-off SUFC'09 introduced to SUFC'10. Granty looks scared. SUFC'10 introduced to each other.

'13 - :Goal: SUFC'09 take lead when Simon Francis floats a beautiful cross in for Lee Barnard to score a simple header.

'18 - Corr booked for standing on Johnny Herd. He claims it was an accident as he didn't see the midget.
'39 - :Goal:SUFC'09 score second when Grant ('09) is felled in the box by Grant ('10) who claims Grant ('09) dived. Barnard scores penalty.

HALFTIME. :spread:

'51 - :Red card: Bilel Mohsni lunges in on Alan McCormack, Macca reacts swinging at Mohsni, Mohsni holds him off by placing his palm on Macca's forehead. Both players are sent off.

'56 - Tilson moves Laurent to the wing.

'75 - :Goal:SUFC'10 are back in the game. Francis falls asleep, allowing Paterson to scamper in behind, and squares the ball for Grant ('10) to bundle in despite Adam Barrett's blatent shirt pull.

Sounds about right!!

Southend 09 win 2-0 because of Barnard, Southend 09 after Barnard leaves would lose 2-0 because of rons payments (I agree this should be revisited in 4 or 5 months time)

Steve Tilson----------------Paul Sturrock

GK Mildenhall --------------Morris
DF Francis-----------------Clohessy
DF Barrett ----------------Moshni
DF Mvoto ------------------Barker
DF Herd --------------------Gilbert
MF Scannell ----------------Simpson
MF Grant-------------------Grant
MF McCormack--------------Easton
MF Moussa -----------------Hall
FW Laurent-----------------Corr
FW Barnard-----------------Sturrock

From the 2009 starting XI, 8 of these players are now with League One or Championship clubs. Laurent is currently on trial with a Championship club also. This only leaves Herd and Grant, both of whom are still with SUFC. Perhaps Gilbert is slightly better than Herd, however it is too early to be certain of this. With Grant cancelling himself out as he is on both sides, the 9 other players are all better than what we have now, certainly in terms of status due to the level they are playing at. This 2009 line up was of mid table League One standard in September 2009, certainly stronger than the current team we have.

They may be at a club at a a higher level, but they're not playing at a higher level.

http://www.shrimperzone.com/vb/showthread.php?63215-Players-let-go-over-the-summer

Of the players let go over the summer, only Francis and McCormack played at the weekend and even then Charlton lost heavily.

League two is still a higher level than championship or league one reserve team football.

Level playing at 12 months ago:

Morris - league one
Clohessy - non-league
Moshni - French football
Barker - championship
Gilbert - league one
Simpson - championship
Grant - league one
Easton - league one
Hall - non-league
Corr - league one
Sturrock - non-league

So that's 7 out of 11 who were playing at least as high level as their 2009 Southend counterparts, including 2 who were playing in the championship.

last years team would **** on this years lot, I still maintain that the Mvoto injury so early in the season fuked us. then sellin barney was the nail in the coffin

The 2009 team would win, provided they had been paid!
If all players from both teams were on the transfer market the value of the 2009 side would far outweigh the current crop.

Grant is a completely different player this year though, so I don't think him being in both teams would cancel out

That sums it up for me. The determining factor behind our 2009 squad finishing as a relegated team rather than a mid-table, maybe even pushing for the play-offs team was motivation - specifically, the demotivating effect of not being paid. If we're talking about September teams, the 2009 side would have won at a canter. If it was towards the end of the season (with the 2009 minus Barnard and cash in their back pockets), Sturrock's boys would barely have needed to show up.

Or put it a other way if Paul was managing our 2009 we would have still be in league 1. Pay or no pay the players should have been able to give 100% for 90minutes but too many including the manager saw that as an excuse for lack of effort.
